My Heart Is Tattered and Torn
O Lord
on this eve of Valentine’s Day
when I face deep loneliness
my heart is tattered and torn
with shredded grief.
I wish this holiday
would blow away
like a wisp of smoke
and I could ignore it
with a content heart.
But if I’m being real
it matters to feel loved
acknowledged
and cherished
on this made-up holiday
in the winter doldrums.
While I sit in the quiet
of another long night
I petition you
to sew the strands together
with your lovingkindness
patch the gaping holes
with your compassion
repair the tattered tears
with your everlasting goodness.
It helps to know
you care
about the anguish
of my soul
not just today
but every day
my heart is tattered and torn
with pain and sorrow.
In the days ahead
remind me of the comfort
you provide
when I draw into your lap
to receive
your redemptive love
that mends my heart.
