Why I Write

I have kept a journal since I was 11 years old.  At the age of 16 I heard a calling from God to be a writer when I attended a James Taylor concert.  I put my writing dreams on hold while I raised my babies, but I never stopped filling up journal after journal.  In 2010 I ventured into blogging and began writing out childhood memories.

Writing memoir has been an important part of my healing process, and has inspired me to minister to women who struggle with the same hangups I have.  Hangups like these pop up often in my writing, and I hope to encourage you by sharing how God has helped me through difficulties such as these:

  • perfectionism
  • loneliness
  • depression
  • self-destructive habits
  • emotional abuse
  • codependency
  • passivity
  • toxic relationships
  • marriage trials
  • divorce
  • financial troubles
  • disillusionment
  • spiritual abuse
  • loving a prodigal

My first traditionally published book Transforming Your Thought Life published in October 2019 with Leafwood Publishers. My agent Michelle S. Lazurek was instrumental in helping me get my book contract. The teen version of this book published in the fall of 2021. My third book, Hidden Manna on a Country Road, is due to be published in the fall of 2022.

My first self-published book Christmas Peace for Busy Moms launched in October 2016.  My second book Newness of Life launched in January 2017.  The Fruitful Life published in March 2017. I published this devotional, Hope for the Hard Days, in October 2023.

I’m also a proud contributor to two compilation books: Dear Wife and Perseverance.

In 1994 I painted this sunflower mural.

Why I Love Sunflowers

You’ll see sunflowers all over my site, because my spiritual journey is represented in the life cycle of a sunflower.

Sunflowers are among the tallest of flowers, but require only average or poor soil to reach towering heights. As a child of divorce, I grew up in less than favorable conditions, but my pain allowed me to climb spiritual heights.

As sunflowers grow, their faces follow the sun. I have looked to my Father God for help in navigating difficult pathways as an adult child of divorce, particularly in my marriage to another adult child of divorce.

After sunflowers bloom, their heads droop with the weight of many seeds. Birds feed on the seed heads, and some seeds drop to the ground to become new flowers next year. Often the weight of my past feels like a heavy burden, yet I recognize my story holds potential to bless others, who are like birds. I strive to break dysfunctional cycles for my three children, who are seeds of new flowers.

Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” You could say the same about a sunflower seed, or about a person who practices self-sacrifice so others may grow in faith.

This is why I share my stories with you. I pray you will come to know the God of the Bible as your perfect Heavenly Father in your own life story as I have come to know him in mine.
