Walking with Jesus: Devotions for Autumn & Thanksgiving

If you are looking for a good devotional to read for October and November, this book is a great choice. It is written by a variety of authors who add interest from their different stories. Yet the overall tone is consistent throughout the book – encouraging, thoughtful, and affirming. Some of the devotions are specifically fall-themed, yet not all of them, and I find this to be a good mix. The devotions are very short, which would be ideal for enjoying while you sip a mug of hot tea or cocoa each day this fall.

More Than You Can Imagine

I’m a big fan of Susie Larson’s books, and I was eager to read her newest one. As usual, I felt affirmed, convicted, challenged, and guided by the Holy Spirit after reading her words. What makes this book unique from others is the powerful testimonies from Susie and others she has known. These stories truly challenge you to put hope in more than you can imagine, based on God’s power. The book also has helpful resources in the back for individual or group use – a quick Bible study on each chapter, a list of reflection questions, and a topical group of Bible verse prayer prompts. I highlighted several deep, meaningful passages to ponder more and use for my personal prayer time. It is one of the most impactful books I have read this year.

Now You Can Stop Running

This is truly one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year. It took me longer than normal to finish, yet that’s because the chapters are worth savoring slowly and deliberately. I appreciated the author’s honesty about his severe anxiety and panic attacks. Though I don’t experience that myself, it gave me helpful insight into those who struggle with these things. I also thought his chapter on Jonah’s life was shimmering with great writing and insight. The whole book is thoughtfully crafted and carefully told, with compassion for the reader and gentle yet highly practical tips at the end of each chapter. I want to read it again this year, simply to enjoy its wisdom once more.

Dust to Dust

This book is not an easy read if you are in midlife; however, it is essential reading. It is hard to read about your hidden fears, insecurities, and weaknesses. Yet it’s also affirming to know you aren’t alone in your feelings.

I have read and enjoyed other books by Jen Wilkin. I always appreciate her no-nonsense style and her faithful commitment to the Bible. What shines in a new way through this book is her personal humility toward aging as well as her wry humor. I appreciated this while she unpacked sometimes painful realities.
This book gave me much to consider as I face my fifth decade on earth soon. One part I particularly appreciated was how Jen said those who have no-contact relationships with their aging parents due to abuse can still “honor their fathers and mothers” by connecting with elderly people in the church. This message personally ministered to my situation and I felt affirmed and directed by this advice.

This book will make my top pick list for the year because of the impact it has had on me. I highlighted many quotes to ponder slowly for their profound truths. Though I enjoyed reading this book by myself, t would be even more enjoyable to discuss with a small group of middle-aged people.

Awaken Delight

Since I have long loved all things French, I was eager to read this book by a French author. I truly enjoyed the rich metaphors carried throughout the book, as well as the word studies in French and Hebrew. This book inspired new joy for me. It has a truly uplifting tone while remaining fully committed to sharing biblical truth.

Everyday Hallelujah

This book has an uplifting, joyful tone. It captures the same voice and feeling you get from listening to Phil Wickham’s music. I enjoyed the stories from his own life, especially stories of how he got started in the music industry, and backstories of how some of his famous worship songs were written. It has the same gentle, peaceful feel I sense in his social media posts. This is the first book I have read from him, and I look forward to reading more in the future.

But I Prayed for This

This book has a unique focus: what if you get what you prayed for, yet it is more than what you wanted, or maybe not what you wanted? It explores this topic with refreshing honesty. Though it takes a realistic look at the different nuances of answered prayers with unexpected results, it maintains a positive and encouraging view that will inspire readers. The portion that spoke to me most was the one with a sandcastle metaphor. The book nudged me to let go, not get drowned in nostalgia, and move forward with hope. I liked the practical lists toward the end of the book, as well as the author’s personal stories.

What Does God Have Planned for Me Next?

If you are seeking God’s direction, this book is a humorous and encouraging read. It won’t give you the specific answer you are seeking – but I’m sure you already know that you can’t find that answer in a book. Instead, it shows you how to get to know God better so you can discern his will and hear his still, small voice more clearly. I like the author’s honesty as he shares stories from his life as well as some hard-hitting truths we need to hear. Overall, this is an uplifting book that will make you smile while gently directing you closer God.

Emotional Endurance

This book is one of the most practical ones I’ve read this year. I highlighted many passages with practical value. It is helping me choose more margin in my schedule. It is also showing me how the hard things I face are building endurance, and why this matters for my everyday life. It’s been a helpful read for this season of my life.

100 Days of All Things New

This is an ideal devotional for the new year, intended for middle-aged women. It features Candace’s signature girlfriend voice that I have enjoyed in her previous books. There are 100 days of devotions in which she shares meaningful and relatable stories. There is a focus Bible verse as well as a short prayer. The book is designed with a clean, classy aesthetic that is perfect for a fresh start. This book would make a great gift for a special woman in your life.

The Woman Between

Francine Rivers is one of my favorite fiction authors, and I was thrilled to learn that she has a new book coming out in 2027. It was such a pleasure to escape into this historical fiction for a couple days.
This book has a similar timeline and setting in American history to her most recent book, “The Lady’s Mine.”

Often she uses strong personality females for her main characters. But this time, it was a bit different and I appreciate that fact, because I could relate to the character’s people-pleasing behavior. We see great growth in her through the pain and suffering she endures, which is inspiring.

I found familiar motifs I love in Francine Rivers’ novels, including wonderful character development even in secondary characters; delightful descriptions of food, flowers, and fashion; and realistic depictions of how people really think and talk, especially the males.

There are a couple spicy scenes, yet I did not feel that they were extraneous. I felt they were true to life and necessary to the story. However, if you are sensitive to this, now you have a heads-up.

What I liked most about this novel is the clarity it gave to the steep cost that sin extracts from us. Sins like revenge, unforgiveness, selfishness, lust, greed, gossip, passivity, and pride run prominently throughout the storyline. However, as the characters let God into their lives, these sins were redeemed and healing took place, which transformed the people and the community.

This was such a satisfying read which gave me affirmation for some things I have suffered, and also showed me certain things that still need work inside me. That’s what the best Christian novels do; they don’t simply entertain us, but also invite us to greater spiritual depth.

I will miss the characters in this book, and I can only hope that a possible spinoff will result from this novel.

The Poem of Her Wings: A Story About Dolly the Butterfly

This is a sweet book that little girls will love. It tells a story about contentment in how God made you to be. Fans of Dolly Parton will enjoy this book, because the main character is modeled and named after her. It’s a cute story for children ages 2-8.

Hope in the Ashes

This is an exciting, fast-paced book for middle-grade readers. It chronicles historical details of the Great Chicago Fire, sharing about the tragedy in age-appropriate ways. It shows the best and worst sides of humanity in face of crisis. The book also centers around preacher D. L. Moody, who led a revival after the fire and helped collect relief funds. This is an inspirational story that has the same great quality of other Inspiration Station books.

Counting My Blessings

This is a beautifully illustrated book based on the author’s highly popular contemporary Christian song by the same name. The rhyming is great and weaves in the song to the storyline well. Children will love the dynamic pictures that invite them into the story.

A Time for Everything

This is an ideal book for very young children, under the age of 5. The bright colors and cute animals will catch their attention. The storyline follows a typical day of a toddler or preschooler, from eating to playing, to resting and taking a bath. It is an inspirational and fun story with an encouraging biblical message.

Healing Stress with God

Reading this book helped me identify some obvious places where I am stressed out, and also several places where I didn’t realize I need help with my stress. It truly ministered to me as I read it. I love that the chapters are brief enough to enjoy while having breakfast or a quick break during the day. The 40-day plan is great to follow one day at a time, because the devotions and tips build upon each other. It has high value for your spiritual life, your health, and your emotional well-being. I highly recommend it for women dealing with stress who are looking for practical and spiritual solutions at the same time.

Love Is Never Restricted

Before I read this book, I had no idea how anorexia affects someone’s brain and alters their behavior. This book is so eye-opening on that topic.

It’s also a powerful testimony of grit and determination as a family is rocked to its core when the authorities step in and create chaos. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but you will be shocked and outraged at what this family had to endure.

However, you’ll also be surprised at the depth of this mother’s love for her child and family, and the way she stood firm on the truth.

It is not just a helpful book for caregivers and parents dealing with anorexia. It’s a book to increase empathy, understanding, and compassion for families who struggle with this complex problem.
