How to Meditate on the Names of God

Do you want to learn how to meditate on the names of God? I have three tips for you, plus a free printable!

We’re continuing in the Weapons of Righteousness series I began last week with this post, How to Deepen Your Friendship With God. In that post, I mentioned praise as a weapon we can use to fight back in spiritual battles.

Why Meditate on the Names of God?

Meditating on God’s names is another powerful weapon of righteousness.

Before you feel intimidated by this, I want to walk you through something familiar.

Think about it: What’s the first thing you learn about someone new? Their name.

Then, what’s next? You ask them what they do for work, right? That’s how you get a handle on who the person is (at least here in the United States).

If you go a little deeper, you might learn about their relationships, hobbies, interests and passions. You might discover their beliefs, voting preferences, religion and affiliations. All in a short 5- or 10-minute conversation.

If you didn’t know any of these things about the person, they would be a complete stranger to you, right?

This is why it’s important to know God’s names and think about them deeply. You’ll discover who God is and what he’s about from his names. They will tell you what he cares about and what he intends to do.

Most of all, you’ll learn how much God loves you by meditating on his names. You’ll stop believing the lies you’ve been told all your life, from yourself, Satan and others. Also, you’ll begin to grasp God’s character and see how it is different from anyone else you know.

You’ll start to trust God more, each time you meditate on his names.

How to Meditate on the Names of God

Since the mid-1990s, I’ve been using a perpetual calendar on the names of God, created by Christian calligrapher Timothy R. Botts. These names of God have anchored me to the truth of God’s Word and taught me more about God’s character.

Each morning, I flip to a new page on the calendar, and meditate on the name for a few minutes. I think about examples of that name in action in Scripture. I also consider how that name of God has been true or comforting in my life. Often, the name of God for that particular day seems just right for the situations I’m facing.

I encourage you to also use a tool for meditating on the names of God. I’ve prepared a free printable for you HERE. The first page is my favorite names of God, and the second page is a list of recommended resources to help you in your meditation time. I hope these resources will encourage you as you start meditating on God’s names.

3 Ways to Meditate on the Names of God

Here are three more tips for helping you meditate on the names of God:

1. Pray God’s names.

Use the names of God as a basis for prayer. For example, when I’m feeling stressed, I love turning to Psalm 18:2 and praying those strong names of God back to him. I ask him to be my rock, refuge, deliverer and shield in times of trouble. By praying these names, I feel comforted and encouraged in my time of need. I know you’ll also gain greater faith from praying God’s names.

2. Praise God’s character.

As noted above, praise is a powerful weapon against the principalities of darknessPraise declares in the heavenly places that we love and worship God alone. When you read a name of God, praise him for that quality. For example, you could say about Psalm 23: “Lord, I praise you as my Shepherd today. I trust you will guide me and protect me in this valley.” Praising God’s character is a wonderful way to connect more deeply with him.

3. Proclaim God’s goodness.

Our world needs to know who God is. Don’t just keep the goodness of God to yourself. Proclaim it on social media and in personal conversations. Don’t be afraid to tell people the good things God is doing in your life. If you take that approach, you won’t be preaching at them. You’ll simply be pointing them to God, because they can’t argue with you about whether God is at work in your life!

I’d like to leave you today with a quote from a wonderful new book I’m enjoying, called The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble. She writes, “Storing up truth about God…is one way to make sure our feet are on solid ground when the storms come, because He’s where the joy is!” By meditating on God’s names now, you’ll be well-prepared for any future problems you’ll face, friend.
