An Experience Like No Other is a prayer celebrating intimacy with God. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the eighteenth one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021. Today’s prompt is “Experience,” and here is my prayer/poem.
An Experience Like No Other
O God,
My relationship with you
has been an experience like no other.
Many meet you first
as Jesus
because you walked this earth
as the Son of Man
yet Son of God.
You seem more touchable
though none of us
have ever seen you.
Then some hesitate
to meet you as Father
due to broken roads
with their own fathers
or misappropriations
of your justice
and mercy.
So many aren’t sure
of the Spirit’s presence
nebulous and fuzzy
so you, Holy Spirit
are relegated
to a lesser role.
But for me
the experience
of getting to know you
has been like no other.
As a four-year-old
with a gaping father wound
you met me first as Father
bigger than me
trustworthy and strong
watching over me with care
like the always-lit candle
encased by stained glass
hanging over the pulpit
every Sunday.
But you weren’t only there:
you were in my room
when I was crying
over family hurts
inviting me into your lap
for comfort.
Then as a teen
I learned about you
Holy Spirit
from Dr. Stanley’s teachings
and I wondered
at the way you worked
all things together
for my good.
I recognized your voice
in your Word
and again
when you spoke to me
the day I contemplated
self-destruction.
I knew it was you
because the same warm
loving presence
hovered over me in my bed
as when I crouched
in the dark bathroom
inviting you into my heart.
Many years later
with far more compiled
hurts, you told me
it was time
to really get to know you
Jesus.
I meditated on a verse
in Song of Songs
while laying on my left side
and sensed you
putting your left arm
under my head
while your right arm
embraced me.
No greater peace
has ever filled me.
What a wonder
intimacy with you
is possible
O Lord Most High.
The doorway
will always be
your Word.
When I open the pages
your rhema breath
rushes over me
inviting
me to another experience
like no other
with you.
