Profession vs. Calling is a prayer of thanks for God’s guidance. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the seventeenth one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021. Today’s prompt is “Profession,” and here is my prayer/poem.
Profession vs. Calling
Father God,
I’m thankful for your guidance
as I choose between
my profession
and my calling.
Peter was a fisherman
used to throwing his nets
out to pull in fish.
With hard labor
and weathered hands
he struggled to earn
his living
from the waters.
That’s right where
you chose to meet him
Jesus
in his profession.
You chose to show him
after he toiled hard
all night long
and found no fish
you were still in control.
At once
a huge group
of fish in the sea
swam toward Peter’s nets
at your calling
so many gathered
his boat nearly sank
with the weight
of that blessing.
Dear Peter
fell at your feet
calling himself unworthy
the man who had wrapped
his identity
too tightly in his profession.
You smiled at him
and said, “Come,
I will make you
fishers of men.”
A new calling
that would change Peter
and change the world.
Father God,
today I pray you will choose
to show me
that the hard work of my profession
matters, and yet
you are the only one
capable of the heaviest lifting.
You want me to cast my cares
on you like Peter
cast his nets into the sea
away from me
trusting you will fill them.
And you call me
like you called him
to be a fisher of men
a high calling
to build your kingdom
while I walk this earth.
Help me remember
my calling precedes
and supercedes
my profession
weaving in and out of it
like fish swimming
in your currents
willing to change course
immediately
at your command
to put your glory
on display.
