How to Reach Out for God’s Comfort

When you need comfort, what do you reach for first? Even as a Christian, it took me years to reach out for God’s comfort before anything else.

Comfort in the Wrong Things

Without thinking, I used to immediately reach for creature comforts when I felt sad, lonely or rejected. These were my favorite go-to items…are any of them on your list as well?

Chocolate

I am fairly addicted to chocolate. It has beneficial properties for soothing stress, but when it replaces God, it becomes an idol.

Sleep

I’m the kind of person who needs at least eight hours of sleep to function. When I’m stressed, I shut the entire world out by napping in my ultra-comfortable bed. That’s not healthy–it’s avoidance.

Daydreams

I can escape from stress in a moment’s notice with my vivid imagination. That’s why I have to avoid reading too many romance novels or watching too many Hallmark movies, since they offer false comfort when I’m feeling lonely and provide fodder for daydreams.

Shopping

I enjoy retail therapy, even if I’m simply browsing the clearance racks at JCPenney, Target or Barnes & Noble. But when I head to the store before taking my concerns to God, I get a high that leaves as soon as I unpack the bags.

Friends

I am blessed with wonderful, godly friendships. However, I have been known to call my friends for help before going to God first in prayer. That’s getting things backward since God wants to be my closest friend.
