A Prayer for Wisdom

In these last few weeks before the 2020 U.S. election, I’m writing prayers for biblical virtues for America. I’ll also include no-filter pictures of the changing leaves in my Missouri woods. May these Scripture-based prayers strengthen and encourage you.

A Prayer for Wisdom

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
James 1:5 NLT

God of the Universe, we praise your name because you are so great, high and mighty. Yet you promise to share your wisdom with us if we ask for it! We are amazed at your generosity. May we receive your wisdom in this season of making decisions about how we vote. May you guide our leaders to build their decisions on the wise principles in your Word. Not our will be done, but yours, Father.

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it.
Genesis 3:6 NLT

Father, we forsake the false wisdom of the world. Instead, we crave the wisdom only you can give. May you guard us from seeking worldly wisdom and help us choose to follow you with all our hearts, minds, souls and strength. May we not make decisions we will regret like Adam and Eve did with the forbidden fruit. Guard our choices with your wisdom.

Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?
2 Chronicles 1:10 NLT

Lord, Solomon prayed this prayer when he became king of Israel. He humbly admitted he needed your wisdom and knowledge to govern well. May our leaders have the same humility that leads them to seek your perfect wisdom in ruling over your people. May we also seek your wisdom to lead in the spheres where we have influence.

Wisdom is more valuable than gold and crystal. It cannot be purchased with jewels mounted in fine gold.
Coral and jasper are worthless in trying to get it. The price of wisdom is far above rubies.
Job 28:17-18 NLT

Holy Spirit, may we value the insight and wisdom you give us more than we value fine jewelry. May we consider it beautiful, precious and worth protecting. We must seek your wisdom over the cheap knowledge the world offers. May our leaders also recognize the priceless value of godly wisdom, and seek it out today.

For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6 NLT

Lord, your knowledge is vast, and your wisdom is great. May we never consider our thoughts higher than your thoughts, our ways higher than your ways, or our opinions above correction. When you share your wisdom with us, may we trust it fully, considering it a gift beyond price. May we treasure your wisdom and use it prudently. Thank you for trusting us with your wisdom as your children, Lord!

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3:7 NLT

Father, we confess that we have sometimes been puffed up with our own knowledge, and taken great pride in our own opinions. We have considered ourselves wise while forgetting the wisdom in your Word. But even the wisest among us knows nothing compared to you. Remind us to turn away from evil and follow you when we feel our pride puffing up. May our leaders reject pretenses of wisdom and trust you instead of their own selfish desires for power and prestige.

“You felt secure in your wickedness. ‘No one sees me,’ you said. But your ‘wisdom’ and ‘knowledge’ have led you astray, and you said, ‘I am the only one, and there is no other.’”
Isaiah 47:10 NLT

Father, your Word tells us that when we feel proud in our own wisdom and knowledge, destruction is certain. We don’t want to be laid low due to the attitude expressed in this verse. May we humble ourselves today and choose to accept your wisdom instead of our own. May we say instead, “You are the only God of wisdom, and there is no other.” May our leaders revere you as the ultimate source of wisdom as well.

The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.
Isaiah 50:4 NLT

O God, as we draw near to the appointed decision time, give us fresh wisdom each morning. Open our hearts and minds to receive it willingly. May you prompt us to share your wisdom with the weary, so we can comfort and encourage them as well.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
