When You Need a Rescue

Are you in need of a rescue today? Not from a superhero (although that sounds exciting). No, only the Lord God Almighty can rescue you in a way that makes a difference.

I’ve needed both literal and spiritual rescues many times in my life. We humans just aren’t made to handle issues on our own, and we desperately need God’s rescue when we feel overwhelmed by life’s problems.

Do You Need a Rescue?

The righteous face many troubles, but the Lord rescues them from each and every one.

Psalm 34:19 (NLT)

Do you need a rescue? Maybe you aren’t facing a life-or-death situation right now, but you still feel like you are drowning in troubles. They are suffocating, smothering, choking or burning you with their intensity.

To my knowledge, I’ve only needed a real-life rescue once…Maybe you’ve required a real-life rescue as well. Whatever the situation, you have someone to thank for rescuing you.

Every one of us needs spiritual rescue. We’re all walking around with troubles we can’t handle alone. This verse clearly states that even those God considers righteous, or his followers, will face many troubles. It’s not a question of whether we need rescue–it’s a question of when…

My LifeLesson

For most of my life, I depended too heavily on other people or things to rescue me. I was a needy person, overwhelming friends with my emotional needs. I hoped they could rescue me from the pain. They could provide comfort, but they couldn’t rescue me from my dysfunction. Neither could food, sleep, books or anything else I turned to when I faced troubles.

As a young adult, I started turning directly to God for rescue. Though I had been a Christian since childhood, I typically waited until I had exhausted all other options before turning to God for rescue. But as I sought Christian counseling for my problems, I learned to turn to him first, asking for him to rescue me with his limitless power, might and strength. Only he was big enough to handle all my problems and pull me up out of them. He can set us on a high rock so we can gain a heavenly perspective (see Psalm 27:5).

By seeking God first for rescue, we can find peace despite the troubles we face. God may not take your trouble away, but he will help you rise above it with faith, perseverance, wisdom, and diligence. He will help you bear the fruits of the spirit in every trial you face. In this way, he will rescue you from the “worldly sorrow” that discourages you and help you grow through the “godly sorrow” you are facing (see 2 Corinthians 7:10-11).

Your troubles will increase your faith if God is your rescuer. Trust that he is able, willing and ready to deliver you from your current trouble, right now. Ask him to provide the peace that passes all understanding, even if he does not immediately remove the trouble. Name him as your rescuer and rest in his strong yet gentle embrace.

My LifePrayer

Dear Father in heaven,

You are my Rescuer, Deliverer, and Strength. You are bigger than my trouble, and I trust that you want to grow my faith in every trouble I face.

Jesus, you are my Prince of Peace. Give me peace within my current troubles. I believe that you will rescue me from the pain of my situation, even if you choose not to remove it. I know that you have a plan for me to start trusting you more through this time of trouble.

Holy Spirit, bear the fruits of the spirit in me as I face this trouble and all others to come. Thank you for providing an abundant life for me, no matter what I go through.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
