Learn to Manage Your Feelings

I remember writing in my junior high journals – “Life is just so COMPLICATED!” Emotion after emotion jumbled together in my teenage mind. I didn’t learn to turn my hurt feelings over to God first until I was in my 30s. But that choice made all the difference in my peace level.

Here are several helpful lessons on managing feelings I learned through Bible study, small group meetings, and therapy:

  1. God created us to be emotional. Our emotions are gifts from him. They make us human and also reflect our Creator. Feelings are not to be suppressed, but rather managed with his help.
  2. Scripture includes the full range of feelings. We see all the emotions not only in Bible people, but many emotions in God himself. Reading the Bible will help you recognize that you aren’t alone in feeling the way you do. A good place to start is by reading the Psalms every day.
  3. Feelings can be managed. We don’t have control over many things in life, but we do have control over our feelings. Our feelings don’t have to control us. That single truth helped me recover from codependency, depression and hopelessness.
