January 2022 Christian Book Picks

Garden Maker

Garden Maker

In the winter I get bit by the gardening bug. This lovely book is whetting my appetite for spring and beyond in my garden. Filled with gorgeous photos, it’s part gardening manual, part Christian living book. As a member of the launch team, I received a PDF and I’ve been wowed by the content. I cannot wait for my beautiful hardcover copy to arrive this week! You can get a sense of the book’s photographic style by visiting Christie Purifoy’s Instagram page. Also, check out the garden-themed interview I had with her a few years ago HERE.

Healing Devotional for Women

Healing Devotional for Women

I’ve been reading Rebecca Hastings’ blog posts for a long time, and I delighted in her short book of meditations you can see HERE. This new collection of her devotions perfectly captures her encouraging style. She’s included short daily readings with meaningful personal anecdotes and insightful biblical applications. If you are going through a season of seeking healing, like I am now, these gentle devotions will uplift your spirit.

Kingdom Men Rising Devotional

Kingdom Men Rising Devotional

I’ve been using this compact, powerful devotional with my two teenage boys over breakfast. It has Tony Evans’ signature strong voice and powerful teachings in a short format which calls men to be kingdom builders. The thoughtful action questions pull no punches and get right to the heart of the daily teachings. Shor prayers consistently invite men to engage their faith in service to others. The soft leather-feel cover and compact size make this an ideal gift for men of all ages, particularly young men like my own. It would also be an excellent resource for small group discussion.

One Word for Today

One Word for Today

This is a 90-day devotional with a single word as the focus of the daily devotion. It capitalizes on the popularity of focusing on one word of the year, which often gets buzz in January. This book is very convenient, with a very short 2-minute read time along with quick reflection questions, a prayer, declarations and an action step. Great idea to help you narrow your focus to one concept per day. Good for teens and adults, both male and female.

God is my Hiding Place

God Is My Hiding Place

Anyone who loves Corrie Ten Boom’s The Hiding Place will love this book. It is made up of key vignettes and teachings from her life story, distilled into short devotions. I read it over Christmas break and God spoke directly to my heart again in her famous story of forgiving the Nazi commander who tortured her. The day I read it was probably 25 years after I had first read the story, and God powerfully used it at just the right time in my life. It’s a delight to revisit her faith stories in this new format. It’s a lovely collection that will encourage many.

She Works His Way

She Works His Way

Working women need a particular kind of encouragement in the middle of all the things they juggle. Michelle Myers and Somer Phoebus speak right to the heart of a working woman, digging deep into her motives and struggles. It’s not a surface book with little tips to help with time management. Instead, it’s a heart-level book written from their own wrestling matches with God, which encourages working women to engage their faith at all levels of their lives. The prayers at the end of their chapters are especially meaningful. I liked the way they honestly wrote about defeating comparison and cultivating contentment.

Unleashing Peace

Unleashing Peace

This is perhaps my favorite book of the month, because it speaks about my favorite fruit of the spirit – peace. Until this point, I have not been familiar with this author, who is well-known and well-accomplished. He writes as a cross between a counselor and professor. He teaches based on a great deal of research and shares engaging testimonies from many of his highly accomplished Christian colleagues. The author also writes with compassion and humility, inviting the reader to seek the wholeness of shalom rather than a temporary, worldly form of peace. I’m learning much from this book and enjoying its unique perspective. A deep, rich look at God’s balm for an anxious world.

100 Prayers Every Christian Should Know

100 Prayers Every Christian Should Know

This is a beautiful and practical collection of prayers from many voices of faith throughout the centuries. It is divided into groupings like “Prayers for Peace and Comfort” and “Prayers for Humility.” Each day begins with a short paragraph of context with a historical background. Then after the prayer, a “Why This Prayer” paragraph gives thoughtful reflection and further insight. A great book for history buffs and those who want to know more about the saints of history.

God With Us: 365 Devotions

God With Us

This year-long devotional features reflections from classic Christian writers including John Calvin, St. Augustine, John Bunyan, D. L. Moody, Jonathan Edwards, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, C. S. Lewis, Charles Spurgeon, John Newton and many more. The commentary ranges in length from a single sentence to a longer paragraph or prayer. When the reflection is short, two or three are included in that day’s reading. The excerpts are lightly edited to make them more readable for modern consumers. It’s a convenient resource to help you familiarize yourself with the greatest Christian thinkers and church fathers, without needing to consult a huge library of individual books.

The Whole Bible Story

The WHOLE Bible Story

This is a highly abridged version of the Bible, perfect not just for children, but for adults who want a quick survey of the entire book. The chapters are easy to understand, and written in a fast-paced, fun-to-read voice. Engaging illustrations and side bars hold attention on nearly every page. Extra elements like “Interesting Stuff in This Section,” “What’s the Point,” and “Who’s Who” increase engagement and give readers things to spot in the upcoming chapter. It also shares glimpses of prophecy fulfillment throughout the Old Testament into the New Testament. An excellent book for family Bible reading, and also a great gift for new Christians or adults who are curious about the content of the entire Bible.

3-Minute Devotions to Laugh and Reflect

3-Minute Devotions to Laugh and Reflect

This is a fun, light-hearted book best for people age 40 and up, who will be most likely to get the jokes. Each short reading has a funny church-based comic, then an accompanying devotion on a featured verse. The light tone gently nudges you toward spiritual growth in areas you may have overlooked, with good spiritual nuggets to savor. A great gift book for someone who likes dry yet clean humor.

The Bible Recap Study Guide

The Bible Recap Study Guide

I loved the Bible Recap book and was eager to get my hands on these two new related resources. This study guide has daily questions that correspond with the main book, usually 5 to 8 questions per day. The questions are sometimes basic and factual: “Who wrote 1 Chronicles?” Others are more reflective: “David spends the first four verses of Psalm 43 talking to God. Who is he talking to in the last verse?” What can we learn from this practice? Why is it important?” This book would be wonderful for individual study and would also adapt well for group use.

The Bible Recap Journal

The Bible Recap Journal

Here’s another helpful resource to complement the other two books. There are four parts in each entry: things I loved, learned, noticed, and want to research. Then each day includes a short prayer, a Bible verse or quote, and the signature God Shot – where you see God’s attributes on display. All three books would make a great gift for someone wanting to do a simple, self-guided Bible study.
