January 2021 Christian Book Picks

Here are my January 2021 Christian book picks for you. This is a great group of books for spiritual growth.

The Bible Recap

The Bible Recap

I am loving this commentary, which helps me gain new understanding from my daily One Year Bible readings. You can follow the plan the author lays out, or look up commentaries based on the chapters you are reading. It’s written in fresh, contemporary language, and it’s enhancing and rounding out my knowledge of familiar passages. A great way to deep dive into the scriptures for an extra few minutes per day.

Dream Big

Dream Big

I love Bob Goff’s inspirational stories, and this new book doesn’t disappoint. I’m reading this book in a group study, and just one quote from each chapter sparks 10 to 15 minutes of discussion. It’s an empowering read with Bob’s trademark storytelling, humor and wise experiences. A great read to inspire you to think differently in the new year.

Restoration Year

Restoration Year

What a treat to enjoy this rich, hopeful devotional each day. John Eldredge’s wisdom often stops me in my tracks and gives me something new to ponder for hours. I need more hope in my life, and this book is helping me find it. It’s showing me many hidden areas which need reformation and restoration. I’m so grateful for it. It’s also a beautiful book with a nice finish on the cover.

The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul

The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul

This is the prettiest book I’ve read in the new year. The floral watercolor illustrations draw me in, and Carla Gasser’s peaceful writing keeps me engaged. She uses a four-part SOUL method for mind and heart renewal – search, observe, use and lean – to guide you, along with engaging questions and spaces to write. A gorgeous keepsake book that would make a beautiful gift.

The Burden of Better

The Burden of Better

Heather Creekmore is a fellow Leafwood author (see my book here), and I’m glad she reached out to me for connection. Heather is passionate about teaching women to stop comparing themselves to others and embrace their uniqueness in Christ. I really enjoy her upbeat, girlfriend voice in this book. It kept me engaged, along with her humor. A thoughtful, entertaining read on an important area of spiritual growth.

She Walked Before Us

She Walked Before Us

I enjoy studying women in the Bible, and this is a unique study resource. The author retells stories of 12 Old Testament women. The chapters open with a fictional story of the woman, then the author’s notes along with historical references. Then the story shifts back to fiction, and finally wraps up with more thoughts and questions from the author. I like the author’s probing questions, which help me consider the stories from new angles and apply the lessons to my life. I would have preferred a single switch between the fiction and nonfiction part, but it didn’t detract from the quality of the writing. A great read for fans of both fiction and nonfiction.

Living Unbroken

Living Unbroken

Tracie Miles is one of my favorite Proverbs 31 Ministries authors. I always appreciate her honesty and vulnerability, and I connect with her stories. Though I have not experienced the heartache of divorce as an adult, I have experienced it as an adult child of divorce. I’m glad that Tracie sent me this book, because it gives me a new angle of understanding on the unique struggles divorced women face. It’s a sensitive, affirming and empowering read, and I am certain it will help many women heal and find new hope.

Deep Simplicity

Deep Simplicity

This is a peaceful book, written in a traditional style, about what it looks like to abide in Christ. It provides several scriptures in each chapter to help you have further study. I would have liked to see more personal stories from the author in this book. But it is solidly biblical and could be a good resource for research and sermon preparation.

I had the joy of reading books by three self-published authors this month. Here are my reviews for each of them.

The Best Is Yet to Come

Are you concerned about the news headlines, and newly curious about end times prophecy? That’s where I am, and this book is speaking right to me. It’s a timely read that is helping me choose hope as it guides me through Scripture. The author does a good job of basing her teachings directly on the Bible, and incorporating her own stories into the text. I’m thankful for her commitment to searching the Scriptures for truth and sharing them with her readers. A book to educate you and calm your fears.

Sin Tastes Good

Reina Rose asked me to interview her on her broadcast, then sent me a copy of her book to review. I’m enjoying her extended metaphors throughout the book, linking sin to junk food. She also links spiritual growth to fitness in creative ways. Reina speaks from her past experience as a fitness professional, and writes in a warm, relatable style. As one interested in health and wellness along with spiritual growth, I’m really enjoying this read.

Restoring the Broken Places

We all need growth in the area of forgiveness. That’s what Becky Cortino sets out to help us do. I appreciate the sound biblical teaching in this book, and the times she shared personal stories. However, I wish this book had more personal stories from Becky’s life or from others’ lives to make the chapters more engaging. I know forgiveness is a tough subject to write on. But the stories would help the reader see how real people can forgive and be set free.
