A Helpful Tip for Waiting in Prayer

When you are waiting in prayer, what can you do to stay hopeful? I have a helpful tip for you today!

If you are joining me from my devotion at Proverbs 31 Ministries, welcome! I’m writing there about waiting on God’s best today, and I’m happy to offer a practical tip to help you wait with hope and confidence.

A Helpful Tip for Prayer

If you are waiting a long time in prayer, it can be discouraging. You may feel like you are “wearing God out” with your repeated requests. I know how this feels. Even if you know in your head this isn’t true, your heart wonders if you are wasting your time and God’s time with the repeated request.

I learned a hopeful tip from Dr. Michael Youssef’s excellent book, Life-Changing Prayers. He encourages readers to thank God in advance for the answers you can’t yet see.

In my post at Proverbs 31 Ministries today, I tell a story of waiting in prayer for 18 months. Well, I’m still waiting for those prayers to be answered, nearly two years after the call to pray began. It’s been a longer, more complex, more winding journey than I ever anticipated. But I’ve gained peace by specifically thanking God in advance for what I couldn’t see.

Practical Ways to Thank God in Advance

Though I can’t reveal the details of my prayer journey, I can illustrate this concept with a different example. Let’s say you are praying for a loved one to be saved. You may have been praying for many years, and you may be weary on this journey. Here’s how you can practically apply this tip to your prayers for your loved one.

  • Father, I thank you in advance for the ways you will show my loved one your grace and kindness today.
  • Jesus, I thank you in advance for the stronger faith you will build in me as I persist in prayer for my loved one.
  • Holy Spirit, I thank you in advance for the people through whom you will speak life to my loved one.
  • God, I thank you in advance for how you will use this hard situation to bring glory to your name.

Do you see how these prayers demonstrate faith? They also require surrender and trust, and they force you to choose a hopeful perspective. These prayers are specific, yet they allow God to do whatever he likes. Prayers like these will bind you to the Blessed Controller of All Things, who is in total control of your situation. This is good news indeed when you are waiting in prayer.
