Book Review: The Next Right Thing

I’m happy to review my latest read for you today. It’s The Next Right Thing by Emily P. Freeman, an author you can’t afford to miss if you love reading Christian non-fiction.

Wise, Witty Advice

This is an excellent, eminently practical read from Emily P. Freeman. I love her clear, wise, funny writing style and I treasure her insights. All of her books have blessed me, and this one is no exception.

She walks us through short chapters of thinking through our choices. I considered new angles that I hadn’t before. Even though I’m not in the middle of making an important decision right now, I’ll be much better prepared since I have these principles to apply.

I especially liked her advice about creating a Life Energy list. As soon as I read the chapter, I got out a pen and some sticky notes. I used one note to write activities that drain me and another that give me life. Some of the activities are on both lists, like gardening and puppy care. Emily says if the good outweighs the bad (I get such joy from my pup and my gardens), then they can be on the life-giving side. This helped relieve my guilt and clarify my choices.

Favorite Quotes from The Next Right Thing

I bookmarked many pages in this book, and here are some of my favorite quotes.

“Every decision feels like a final exam on the first day of class.” (so true for overachievers like me!)

“We want our circumstances to change, to start again, to be brand-new. But when they change, we often don’t give ourselves permission to be new within them.”

“If you think about holding a candle in your hands, you know that if you walk too fast, the flame will blink right out. You have to take slow, measured steps, maybe even block the candle from the wind as you go. So, for now, walk slowly with the flame still it and continue to ask your friend Jesus about the next step.”

Emily shares many intriguing quotes from other authors in The Next Right Thing, making it rich and interesting. I also love her personal stories, which are honest and relatable. Her writing is smart yet approachable. This is why I just subscribed to her podcast, so I can learn more from her.
