A Prayer for Peace

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. Isaiah 9:6-7 NLT

Jesus, we bless your name today. You are the mighty Prince of Peace who reigns forever in heaven and on earth. We eagerly await the day when you will come back to establish the new heaven and new earth, as promised in the book of Revelation.

Today we need your peace, King Jesus. We need the hope that no matter what happens during our lifetimes here on earth, you are in total control. You do not rule with violence; you reign with perfect peace. Your reign is just and fair because you are holy. Let us always look to you as our ultimate authority, our most worthy ruler. We praise you as the Prince of Peace today.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3 NLT

Father God, today we are struggling to control our thoughts. Anxiety is a constant temptation. Only you know what the future holds. We confess that the future troubles us and tempts us to doubt you.

But today, we choose to fix our thoughts on your unchanging character. Your sovereignty and majesty and holiness that knows no human bounds. We choose to elevate you in our thoughts, above our anxieties and fears. As we turn our thoughts back to you again and again, fill us with your perfect peace. Strengthen our trust in you. Give us the peace that passes all understanding, O Heavenly Father.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27 NLT

Jesus, we cannot trust the world to provide peace for us that lasts. In fact, many of us are concerned that the world will turn darker this month with rioting and violence, with further division and strife. We ask you to intervene in our distressed world and give us the gift of peace of mind and heart, no matter what happens in the elections.

We plead with you to prevent further chaos in our country during this difficult year. Protect our government leaders, first responders, law enforcement officers, military personnel, business owners, schools, hospitals and peaceful protesters from harm. May you reign supreme over the darkness that threatens to take hold.

When we are troubled and afraid today, may we turn back to you, Jesus. May we sit at your feet and soak in your lovingkindness. May we accept your gift with open hands, trusting that as we surrender our troubles and fears to you, you will give us peace in return. Thank you for giving us what the world can never give.

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NLT

Jesus, you know that this year has contained many trials and sorrows for us. We are glad that you know each problem that has afflicted us, and that you have collected each of our tears in your bottles. You never promised that we would have an easy life, nor an easy 2020, but you did promise to overcome the world through your resurrection power.

We pray that those who are suffering because they are sick, grieving, jobless, or homeless due to the pandemic would find healing and peace in you. May you alleviate their pain with your loving embrace. May they find the peace they seek in your presence.

Today, may we reflect on all of your teachings, Lord Jesus. We ask that your teachings will give us comfort, strength and encouragement. May we open our Bibles to the Gospels today to hear your words and gain the peace you promise. May the Holy Spirit enlighten us to the truths in your Word so that we will gain new insight and understanding, which leads to greater peace.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NLT

Mighty God, we praise you as the source of all our hopes. We ask you to fill our hearts and minds with your joy and peace today, as we trust you in full surrender. May the Holy Spirit empower us to overflow with confident hope that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Lord, if we choose the peace you promise in these verses, our lives will shine like salt and light in this dark world. Remind us how vital our personal witness is in these times leading up to your return. Give us urgency to know your Word and share it with others. May our hope, joy and peace inspire others to follow you with all their hearts, souls, minds and strength. May a new revival of faith in this nation begin with us today.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
