The Prayer Coin: A Book Review

The Prayer Coin

I enjoy Elisa Morgan’s deep Scripture digs on the radio program Discover the Word, and she does the same great job in her books. The Prayer Coin shows us how Jesus’ honest, two-sided prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane can inspire our own prayers and deepen our trust in God’s plan for our lives.

Jesus prayed both “Take this cup” and “Not my will” in his famous Garden of Gethsemane prayer. On the night before he died, he offered this honest prayer to his Father in heaven. He did not want to face the inevitable shame of sin, physical suffering, and separation from his Father. So he asked that the cup would be taken. But in the same breath, he prayed that the Father’s will would take precedence. He was willing to do whatever the Father thought was best. Aren’t we all glad that he decided to follow his Father’s will? I’m rejoicing right now as I write these words!

Elisa applies the two-sided prayer coin to several of her life struggles. I was inspired by the way she demonstrated how to practically apply this prayer. I’m now using her two-sided prayer model on a regular basis, and I’m so grateful for the biblically-based insight this book provided me.

Prayers for the Battlefield: A Book Review

Prayers for the Battlefield

This book helps moms pray diligently and specifically for their families and children. So many of us moms want to pray, but we don’t realize how crucial it is for the health and well-being of our families. Heidi St. John writes from experience, touching on the most critical areas that need prayer in our homes.

I like the relevant topics in this book as a mom of one teen and two tweens. The prayers are brief and written in a power-packed, convenient format for moms-on-the-go. The book is small enough to fit in a purse, which is an added bonus. Moms who feel too busy or too scattered to pray will find focused, motivational prayers in this book.

Several of my posts on spiritual warfare have been very popular with readers like you. I appreciate that Heidi writes frankly about this topic in her book. She teaches moms that spiritual warfare is real, and that prayer is the key to fighting the enemy’s attempts to wage war on the next generation. This book is a powerhouse packed in a lovely gold-and-purple package, and I will be revisiting it many more times in the future. I highly recommend it to moms who want to know more about praying specific and powerful prayers over their families.

Tyndale House generously granted me a preview copy of Prayers for the Battlefield.

Fervent: A Book Review

Fervent

This powerful book on prayer has been sitting on my to-read list for many months. I am blown away with its insight on spiritual warfare. Priscilla Shirer gives you a clear picture of how the enemy is trying to defeat you in ways that you don’t realize. She wakes you up to the truth and gives you a clear, scripture-based plan for handling the battles you are facing with prayer.

Priscilla is a gifted Bible teacher and speaker. Her writing holds power and influence. I find her perspectives riveting; I can’t get them out of my head (in the best sort of way).

Here are several powerful quotes from Fervent that are changing my prayer life:

“The kind of prayer strategy we’re about to employ treats every temptation as the potent, life-threatening stick of dynamite that it is.”

“When our lives are packed to the brim with things that squeeze God to the periphery, it’s a sure sign we’ve replaced our devotion to God with a love for something else.”

“Unforgiveness is a strategic ‘design,’ craftily implemented by your enemy to ‘outwit’ you, to cripple your effectiveness in prayer and your power to stand against him victoriously.”

You’ll love the calls to action that this book offers you. Experience a jolt of revolution in your prayer life with this exceptional book.

Netgalley generously provided me a copy of Fervent, and I also purchased a hard copy from Lifeway. Yes, it is that good–you simply must get this book!

The Weekly Prayer Project

This pretty book caught my eye on a Target shelf. I thumbed through it and took delight in the watercolor illustrations of plants and succulents. It also has beautiful photos interspersed between the plentiful room to jot your prayers down, based on weekly prayer prompts for a whole year. Every six weeks or so, you can enjoy a well-written devotion that will shape your prayer life. You can use this journal however you like; if you want to do several weeks at a time, go for it! I’m starting it now…you can start it anytime you like.

Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe: A Book Review

Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe

After enjoying sessions presented by Sharon Jaynes at She Speaks, I bought this book from the resource table. This is a wonderful, unique resource that every wife can use to strengthen her marriage.

Sharon first explains how prayer can be used to cover every part of your husband: his head (thoughts), hands (work), legs (spiritual stance), and so on. She tells you how prayer can literally transform your marriage, whether it is stagnant from the humdrums of daily living or on the brink of disaster.

The rest of the book is a 30-day plan for praying over each part of your husband’s mind, body, soul and spirit. She offers scriptures and guided prayer prompts for 30 days. Sharon suggests correlating the day of the month with that day’s round of prayers. She tells you to pray even when you don’t feel like praying, because it will soften your heart toward your husband and offer spiritual protection for your marriage.

Even though I’m a seasoned prayer warrior, I’m sad to say that I have not dedicated daily time to praying for my marriage. This book is now a powerful tool in my arsenal of fighting the spiritual battles in our marriage, and it is helping me find fresh hope. It’s a valuable resource for wives who want to work powerful change in their marriages.

Jesus Every Day: A book review

Jesus Every Day

I also enjoyed a session by Mary DeMuth at She Speaks, and she graciously shared a free copy of this wonderful book with workshop participants.

What I love about Jesus Every Day is reading powerful prayers written directly to Jesus. Mary is a gifted writer who paints beautiful word pictures. She is skilled at capturing the emotions in a woman’s heart and translating them into poignant prayers. There are 365 gorgeous prayers in this book, intended to grow your relationship with Jesus.

The prayers Mary writes are honest and true. If you sign up for her email list, she will email you prayers with your name inserted in the lines. Her personalized prayers will help you feel special and loved.

The prayers in Jesus Every Day will deepen your relationship with God and give you a springboard for your own personal prayers. I am truly enjoying this book and I know it will inspire you as well.

A Praying Life: A Book Review

A Praying Life

I found this book at Lifeway, and I’m so glad I purchased it. There’s a good reason it’s sold so many copies; it is an eminently practical book on a subject that confounds so many. I love the author’s economy of words that so aptly describe problems we have in our prayer lives and the solutions that can fix them.

What I appreciate most about this book is the idea of returning to a childlike style of prayer. When we are dependent on God and trusting him for everything, prayer becomes far less complicated and far more meaningful. What a refreshing concept! I don’t have to jump through hoops. I can just be myself with God in prayer, and he’ll deepen our relationship the more I depend on him.

Most of the time, I don’t mark in my books. But after reading the first five chapters today, I’ve marked dozens of memorable passages in A Praying Life.

I’d love to share a few of my favorite quotes with you here:

“Nothing exposes our selfishness and spiritual powerlessness like prayer.”

“Jesus seemed to need time with God just as much as we do.”

“Praying out loud can be helpful because it keeps you from getting lost in your head. It makes your thoughts concrete. But it is more than technique; it is also a statement of faith. You are audibly declaring your belief in a God who is alive.”

“If you are not praying, then you are quietly confident that time, money, and talent are all you need in life. You’ll always be a little too tired, a little too busy. But if, like Jesus, you realize you can’t do life on your own, then no matter how busy, no matter how tired you are, you will find the time to pray.”

I like the author’s personal anecdotes too. They made me laugh out loud several times. Some of his shortest sentences gave me pause, and I reread them several times. He has a quiet way of making a giant impact, just like many of the other Navpress authors I’ve enjoyed following.

A Praying Life may become one of my all-time favorite books on prayer. I think you’ll like it too.

A Praying Life will revolutionize your prayers with simple, practical teachings that are eminently practical. #prayer #bookreview Click To Tweet

Before I Go: A Free 3-Week Bible Study

Before I Go: A Free Online Bible Study

My friend Sarah Koontz has a new fall Bible study, and I have been privileged to receive a review copy. You can dig deeper into your understanding of Jesus’ final prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane through Sarah’s study.

This 21-day study is sent in convenient email format. I have enjoyed several of Sarah’s email-based studies. She studies the scriptures well and presents the information in an easy-to-digest format. Her graphics are beautiful and inspiring as well.

Here are the main components of the Before I Go study:

  • Understand who Jesus Christ is
  • Receive the free gift of salvation
  • Invite others to accept Jesus’ invitation
  • Study and apply God’s Word to your life
  • Pray with absolute confidence

Here are a few powerful quotes on prayer from this wonderful resource:

“Jesus’ life and ministry was bathed in prayer and ours should be also! Prayer invites heavenly power into our earthly problems. It takes practice to pray with confidence, assurance, and perseverance. And we’ll never get where we need to be unless we are willing to start where we are.”

“This prayer proves Jesus was not a victim of the cross; He was the victor upon the cross. When we choose to share in His life, we share in His victory, and our lives become an extension of His work.”

Sarah also offers you free lock screens and beautiful printables with this study. I hope you sign up today to experience greater power in your prayer life by following Jesus’ example!
