My 2021 Summer Reading List

I have several books that I’ve read, and more that I would like to read, on this list of 2021 summer reads. Enjoy my 2021 summer reading list of Christian fiction and nonfiction, and add a few to your list too. Check out the giveaway of one of the books at the bottom of this post!

Make Their Day

Make Their Day

Make Their Day is a collection of ideas on how to bless people in meaningful ways. What I like about this book is that the ideas range from everyday and affordable to extravagant and luxurious. Dozens of ideas to help you spread kindness and joy all around you, in ways you haven’t considered before. Written in Karen Ehman’s signature warm voice, it even comes with recipes!

God of Wonders

God of Wonders

Everyone loves fresh inspiration for their prayer life. This book is a creative, awe-inspiring book of short chapters guaranteed to make your prayers fresh. I feel as if the Church is suffering from a sense of wonder and awe at God’s presence, and this beautiful little book is a great remedy.

Biltmore Girl

Biltmore Girl

My friend Dawn Klinge is a talented writer of clean, historical Christian fiction. This is the third book in the Historic Hotels collection, and it’s too hard for me to pick a favorite. I enjoyed how all the stories link together, and how this particular book, set in 1968, mirrors the feelings of 2020 in surprising ways. A wonderful escape I didn’t want to end.

Wrecked for God

Wrecked for God

This book was not my cup of tea. Maybe that’s because I have a conservative background, and this author comes from a different angle. I think she went too far in some of her statements, which turned me off. However, some from more charismatic backgrounds may appreciate her fervor and passion more than I did.

Don't Miss Out

Don’t Miss Out

I’m excited to learn more about the Holy Spirit through this book. The Holy Spirit is often a neglected member of the Trinity, but his presence has been vital to my faith. This is a book I’m looking forward to reading this summer.

Discovering God Through The Arts

Discovering God Through the Arts

When I was pursuing my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I was required to take several art history courses. But since I got my degree from a secular school, I didn’t get the Christian interpretation I craved. This lovely book from Moody Publishers invites you to appreciate God’s beauty and creativity not only through painting and sculpture, but through film, music and other contemporary formats. I’m delighting in the full-color pictures displayed inside. This is a book to feed my soul during Sabbath rests this summer.

Growing Slow Bible Study

Growing Slow Bible Study

Jennifer Dukes Lee’s books have never let me down, and I know I’ll love this new Bible study, based on her book Growing Slow, which I ordered today. The book and study urge us to slow down and enjoy God’s presence, with Jennifer’s trademark warmth and whimsical stories. I’ve fallen for all the hype about these books and can’t wait to dig into both of them.

Another Gospel?

Another Gospel?

I read this book from cover to cover, devouring the truth inside as if I was desperate for it. I didn’t know how to describe progressive Christianity and its creeping, negative effects on me until I read this powerful book. How I wish I had read it prior to the summer of 2020, when critical race theory became headline news. This book grounded my faith again, like my doctrine classes at my Christian college. Alisa writes with a rare mix of boldness and humility. I was drawn in by her stories and fascinated by her research. A respectful book that is a must-read for every American Christian.

Finding His Story in History

Finding His Story in History

Matt Somerlot and I connected on Twitter. When I visited his profile for the first time, I was intrigued by his 365-day devotional that incorporates fun trivia and stories. He was gracious enough to send me two copies, one to keep and one to give away (see below for giveaway). I love the quirky, creative vibe of these devotions, which keep me paging ahead to read more. A perfect Father’s Day gift or gift for that person who has everything.

Brave: A Teen Girl's Guide to Beating Worry and Anxiety

Brave: A Teen Girl’s Guide to Beating Worry and Anxiety

According to the research I conducted for my upcoming book for teen girls, anxiety is the number one problem for Gen Z. And that was true before the quarantine. I love Sissy Goff’s gentle, reassuring, affirming tone in these pages. Girls who struggle with this problem will find much-needed guidance and confidence through the biblical principles this book unpacks. A must-read book for a girl who can’t stop the downward spiral of anxiety.

Talking With Teens About Sexuality

Talking with Teens About Sexuality

This summer, I’ll become a mom of three teens. This book will better prepare me for some of the tough questions they’ve already asked me. It will also spark calmer, more balanced discussions in the few years remaining before they move out on their own. I want my children to be prepared and informed about the many issues surrounding sexuality in their generation, and I appreciate the frank, helpful tone these authors offer.

Fledge: Launching Your Kids Without Losing Your Mind

Fledge

I have been reading this book in short bursts, because nearly every chapter makes me cry. My firstborn will be a senior in high school next year, and I’m slowing grieving this loss while celebrating his victories. I love the honesty in this book – I know it’s written by a mom who really understands what I’m going through. She affirms my feelings and gives me ideas I hadn’t considered before, which is very helpful. I need to buy a few more boxes of Kleenex to finish this book.

Live in Light Journal

Live in Light Journal

I was happy to preview the original book, Live in Light, so I knew this journal would be just as wonderful. And it doesn’t disappoint. My soon-to-be teenaged daughter loves journaling, like many of her friends also do. I know she will love the brief writing prompts, which are great for shorter attention spans. The colors and layout are perfect for this age group. A great gift for the teen girl in your life.

Love Centered Parenting

Love-Centered Parenting

I love being at home with my three children more in the summer. But that’s often when my parenting flaws come into full focus, since I’m around them more often to make more mistakes. This book will keep me focused on loving them in practical ways. I look forward to soaking up its wisdom this summer.
