4 Books to Help Your Spiritual Growth

I have four books to recommend to you today. Each one of them will promote spiritual growth in your Christian faith. You’ll enjoy the variety here, and I’d love to know which one you like most in the comments below!

The Jesus Who Surprises

Jesus doesn’t show up only in the Gospels. This wonderful Bible study helps us track signs of his presence in all places of the Old and New Testaments, plus our own lives.

It has a built-in Bible study for individual or group use. I also love the personal stories Dee Brestin includes. She writes with warmth and wisdom, just like what I want from a Christian mentor.

You’ll enjoy learning more about Jesus through this study and talking about it with friends. I look forward to digging into it again soon for my own spiritual growth.

I received a preview copy of The Jesus Who Surprises from Multnomah and Netgalley.

The Middle Matters

I’ve enjoyed listening to Lisa-Jo Baker’s podcast with Christie Purifoy, and that’s why this book caught my attention. I’m also firmly in my middle years, which are full of challenges that surprise me. My parenting approach needs to change, my body has a mind of its own, and responsibilities keep piling up. Lisa-Jo’s bright cover and smiling face won me over–I craved a laugh with her.

And this book delivers. I was hooked by her warmth in the very first chapter. She talks about a pair of jeans that she once loved, before the middle years, but she’s embracing a different viewpoint now. We busy.busy.busy women caught in the middle years need her affirmation! She tells us exactly why God values the middle years, so we can feel free to do so ourselves.

This book stirred up a happy, relaxed feeling in me that I didn’t realize I needed so much. Sometimes our hearts are crying out for affirmation, and this book delivers. If you are a women who feels trapped or discouraged in middle life, run (don’t walk) to pick up a copy of this book. Then savor it guilt-free with a bubble bath, piece of chocolate, and your favorite yoga pants–Lisa-Jo approves, and so do I.

Talk the Walk

This is a book for Christians who want to grow in faith and share the Gospel without being obnoxious in our brash culture. It’s wry, funny and wise.

I laughed out loud at many of his observations from decades of serving as a pastor. He is self-deprecating, sharing his own embarrassing stories of getting it wrong, which puts you at ease.

I enjoyed his tips on when silence is a good idea, balanced by reasons that we can’t stay silent. This book will challenge you, causing you to wince at your own foibles. But that’s healthy, because we all need to weed out the Pharisee inside that threatens to take over our words and actions.

Talk the Walk is refreshingly honest, and that’s what I appreciate most about it. You may be surprised at how much it will help your spiritual growth.

Five-Minute Writing Prompt Journal

Need help getting unstuck from a writing rut? This writing prompt journal is the perfect solution! It has one word to inspire you, plus plenty of room for recording your thoughts.

You could use it for 52 weeks or 52 days…customize it however you like. I enjoyed the peaceful layout and inspirational quotes on writing. A truly helpful resource!

It’s a great resource for you, whether you are a seasoned writer or just starting out. You will be lifted up out of discouragement that is common for writers with this lovely journal. If you are a Christian writer, you can use this journal to track your own spiritual growth too.

I received a preview copy of the Five-Minute Writing Prompt Journal from the author, Kate Motaung.
