Practical Advent is a daily blog series I’m doing throughout Advent this year. Join me on my blog each day for practical faith tips.
Practical Advent, Day 6
Since childhood, I’ve observed Advent each year. It’s been a wonderful way to build my faith and increase my anticipation of Christmas for all the right reasons. I highly encourage you to observe Advent as well, because it can help you be more intentional in this busy season.
In this Practical Advent blog series, I’ll have the same post format to give you about 10-15 minutes of practical tips for loving God, loving others, and loving yourself during the Advent season.
Praise
Each day of Practical Advent, I’ll share one of my favorite songs to listen to during Advent. Take a moment to praise God while you listen.
Here’s a pensive one I listen to every year – Just a Girl by Brandon Heath.
Ponder
Every day of Practical Advent, I’ll share a quote or idea from an Advent book in my collection for you to ponder, along with my thoughts and a few reflection questions.
Today’s quote is from a new Advent book I read this year – Waiting for Jesus by Rich Villodas.
This is a wise, helpful, insightful Advent devotional. I highlighted many helpful quotes. It’s a good book to add to your Advent-themed collection.
Here’s the quote I’ve chosen to share today:
“Advent reminds us that God does want to take things from you but never your joy. He wants to remove things like pride, fear, anxiety, guilt , and shame. His invasions are acts of great love. He breaks in not to rob you but to rescue you. What glorious news, that God longs to be with us. That his arrival sparked the dawning of a new era – one that’s good news for the world.”
Reflection questions:
- What particular things do you sense God wants to remove from you this Advent?
- How does the fact that God longs to be with you (Emmanuel) encourage you today?
Pray
On each post during Practical Advent, I’ll write an original prayer or share one I’ve written in seasons past.
Here’s a post I wrote a few years ago – A Christmas Prayer for Joy and Hope.

Pour In
Here’s something new I’m doing several times per day – a set of squats. I saw this on Instagram and loved this idea – not so much for blood sugar regulation (though that’s great) but for building strength when I don’t have time for long workout sessions. Learn more on his post HERE.
Pour Out
Do you know your love language? More importantly, do you know the love languages of those in your immediate family? This is a simple yet profound way to show love in more meaningful ways. Learn more on my post HERE.
Just for Fun
