Learning to Grow Slow

Learning to Grow Slow is an unedited prayer-poem I wrote in just five minutes. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.

Today’s post is based on the prompt for Five Minute Friday. Today’s prompt is “Slow,” and here is my prayer/poem.

Learning to Grow Slow

Father God,

I’m learning to grow slow

with your help.

I know your thoughts and ways

are higher than mine

and you have the best for me

so I’m sitting still

to listen and learn.

How I want to shoot forth

bold

quick

and bright

like a petunia vine

with irresistible blooms

no one can miss.

Yet you call me to grow

slow

like a native milkweed

whose roots stretch

deep into the ground

drawing their sustenance

from reservoirs of water

no one can see.

You want my roots

deep in you

not only inches deep

like the flashy annual flowers

who live to set their seed

in just one short season.

No, you want me to grow slow

to produce the bloom

that lasts only a week or so

but sustains the monarch butterfly

halfway through her journey

from Mexico to Canada

so her great-granddaughter

can be refreshed

as she passes back through

from north to south

in the months to come.

You want my blooms

producing year after year

in a perfectly timed window

for the benefit of many others.

May I trust you

as you grow me slower

than I think best

because you always know

what’s best for me.

Last year I wrote a post about being resilient like native wildflowers. You can see photos from my garden and read it HERE.
