Take It to Heart

Take It to Heart: 30 Days Through Revelation

Rachel Schmoyer and I have known each other for a long time as fellow bloggers. I am thrilled that she’s released her first book, and it’s wonderful. It’s not a deep dive into end times prophecy as many books on Revelation can be. Instead, it’s a gentle, comforting devotional based on the truths in this important book of the Bible. Rachel weaves personal stories into each brief chapter, which I enjoyed reading. She also builds in further study prompts and has a small group discussion guide. An excellent book for Christian women looking to discover new hope through Revelation.

Mysteries of the Messiah

Mysteries of the Messiah

This book is intelligently written and full of facts you probably have never seen in the Bible before. But it is too left-brained for me, with lots of numbers and biblical history. I need more stories to connect with a Christian non-fiction book. I think it would be a great read for someone who loves to uncover facts and appreciates a more didactic tone. It’s not for me, but I’m certain it will be an interesting book for others.

I received a preview copy of Mysteries of the Messiah from the publisher.

A Faith Unleashed

A Faith Unleashed

If you love dogs, especially rescue dogs, this is a delightful, light-hearted devotional perfect for you. It’s a short read that draws parallels to our spiritual growth from Franklin the poodle’s difficult journey. Unique, humorous, and encouraging.

I received a preview copy of A Faith Unleashed from the author.

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

This Christian classic is a new read to me. It’s based on the Psalms of ascent, and sparkles with Eugene Peterson’s signature wisdom and candor. I’m drinking from the depths of this book, enjoying every new insight.

Walking the Labyrinth

This book is a thoughtful, well-written look at prayer walking, specifically within the confines of a labyrinth. It is full of interesting history about the uses of the labyrinth in church history. The book was written during 40 days of Lent, but it’s an enjoyable read even now in summer. I enjoyed attending a writing workshop by the author several years ago, and I knew his book would be wonderful. It does not disappoint.

I Told the Mountain to Move

I Told the Mountain to Move: Learning to Pray So Things Change

This book is a very personal account of how prayer changed the author’s life during her husband’s difficult health diagnosis. It describes a growth process over a specific span of years in her life and in history. It is often self-effacing, which is refreshing. The book clearly demonstrates the power of prayer to connect with God and make a difference.

Sensing God

Sensing God: Experiencing the Divine in Nature, Food, Music, and Beauty

The author encourages readers to commune with God through their senses. Nature is a prominent theme, as well as seeking joy. Beautiful metaphors throughout. The tone of this book is somewhat scholarly, which may not fit everyone’s tastes. The author also posits that readers can engage with God through art, music, and food, not only in church or in nature.
