August 2019 Christian Book Picks

These are my August 2019 Christian book picks in my favorite reading genre. They are great picks for women who want to grow in faith. I’d love for you to tell me which ones sound best to you in the comments below.

A Redesigned Life by Tracy Steel

A Redesigned Life

I had the privilege of meeting Tracy Steel in person at She Speaks 2018. I’m with her and a few other favorite writing friends in this picture. From left to right: Erin Brown Hollis, Tracy Steel, Misha Stredrick, Lauren Gaskill, and myself.

Tracy’s book was a pure delight to read. She creatively applies metaphors from her background in interior design to our spiritual lives. Though I know next to nothing about interior design, I do have a B.F.A. in graphic design and illustration. As an art student, I learned the same concepts Tracy describes in A Redesigned Life. I had never applied them like she does, and I loved her inspirational twists!

In each chapter, Tracy explains how she applied a design concept in her personal life for spiritual growth. She includes several design tips for your life, so you have instant takeaways. Tracy also includes a brief testimony from another writer in all the chapters. This makes for a lively, interesting read that I enjoyed straight through.

As you might expect, the book is laid out in a visually pleasing way. I enjoyed learning more about Tracy’s life stories of both pain and triumph. You will appreciate her winsome tone and receive fresh inspiration for your spiritual life through this book.

Here I Am by Brittany Rust

Here I Am

Do you want to hear more from God, and recognize his voice? This inspirational book from Brittany Rust will help you navigate a new path, based on biblical truth.

The first half of this book teaches you how to silence the noise in your life so you can hear God’s voice. We all contend with a great deal of noise, fear, distraction and sins in our lives that block God’s voice. Brittany deliberately explains each struggle and temptation, then tells us how to dismantle it. I especially appreciated her deep dive into the fears that we face but don’t realize are keeping us distant from God.

The second half of the book describes how different people in the Bible responded to God’s call with a “Here I Am” statement. I enjoyed how she selected these stories and connected them with this golden thread of commonality. In the final chapters of the book, she describes how Jesus himself responded to God’s call.

This book is well-grounded, serious, and thoughtful. I appreciated Brittany’s teaching and illumination of familiar Bible stories. It’s not an ooey-gooey answer to how you hear from God–it’s an inspiration based on Scripture itself, which I find refreshing. You’ll enjoy it too if you like learning more from biblical examples.

Take Back Your Time by Morgan Tyree

Take Back Your Time

Which of us doesn’t need more intention in our daily schedules? As a work-from-home wife and mom of three, I need all the tips I can get for managing my time and stress.

Morgan Tyree is a professional organizer, writer and fitness instructor. She’s a busy wife and mom, like me. In Take Back Your Time, she shares many organizing tips based on a green, yellow and red light system. This easy-to-remember mental picture is already helping me.

For example, I am a morning person. I have felt guilty for some time for spending my first hours of the day, checking email and social media. The afternoon is when I tackle my content creation. I beat myself up about this, thinking that I should be getting the harder stuff done in the morning. But by studying Morgan’s system, I learned that the afternoon is my green light time, and it’s just fine that it falls that way. It’s OK for me to schedule less draining activities in the morning yellow zone, and recharge in my evening red zone.

She offers many more tips on how to multitask with true efficiency, how to stay on top of emails and social media, and how to manage your calendar. Very solid, tried and true tips. I enjoyed Morgan’s stories of her fails as much as her successes, because they show me that she really knows what she’s talking about! You can also check out her inspirational Instagram feed for before-and-after photos and sign up for some fun giveaways.
