Once Is Enough With God

Once is enough with God. One encounter with him can change everything. I hope this prayer/poem inspires you today.

This piece is based on the Five Minute Friday prompt for the week: Once. It’s unedited, and I wrote it in five minutes flat.

Today’s post is also the twelfth one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021.

Once is enough with you, God –

just one encounter

can change everything.

One giant haul of fish

after a fruitless night

made proud Peter drop to his knees

and see himself as unworthy

yet motivated him to give everything up

and follow you.

One hot afternoon

by the well

was enough for the woman

living in sin

outcast and shamed

but with you

redeemed

and instantly transformed

into an evangelist.

One brush of your hem

was enough for the bleeding

woman, the 12-year sufferer

who didn’t want to bother you

yet was so desperate for healing

she reached out to you

in the throng, and you not only

healed her

you turned your face to her

and called her daughter

lavishing your love

as you did on everyone.

Once was enough for me

as a three-year-old girl

swinging legs over the church pew

seeing your ever-watching eye

represented in a stained-glass

covered candle

and I knew you as my Father.

Once was enough

for me as a teen girl

flirting with suicide

and I heard your voice

of deliverance

warm and clear

and because of your Spirit

I walked away from self-destruction.

Once was enough

to have you holding me

with your nail-scarred hands

Jesus

in the depths of my sorrow.

Though once is enough

with you

to change everything

I long for you

to meet me

again and again.
