An Argument for the Existence of God is a prayer of faith. I’m praying this today, and you can pray this prayer with me.
Today’s post is the eleventh one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021. Today’s prompt is “Argument,” and here is my prayer/poem.
An Argument for the Existence of God
Father God,
If someone were to debate me
on your existence
I would surely point them
to the historic validity
of your scriptures
the endless recursive ways
your Word proves itself
true.
I would also walk them
outside
and point to the stars
clouds
trees
birds
flowers
and ask them
if anyone else
could ever make
something so fine
so beautiful
so holy.
But if they asked me
Why do YOU believe
in the existence of God?
This would be my argument.
Ten thousand times
you have worked a thousand things
together
to guide and direct my life.
No other life force
or series of coincidences
could work all those things
together
for my good.
Sermons, books, podcasts
conversations
billboards
blog posts
Bible verses
songs played without my request
all at just the right time
all traces of your Spirit
and arguments for your existence.
I would try to put into words
the way you have held me
when my grief was slicing
me open, when the moans
came from deep in my soul
and nothing, no one
else, not Percocet
or chocolate
or calls from my best friend
could comfort
me the way you did.
Though I could not see you
your presence was realer
than real, than my own fingers
typing this prayer poem.
I would list the thousand times
you, Jesus, showed up in the faces
eyes
smiles
hands
hugs
meals
gifts
offered by the body of Christ
my brothers and sisters
at the exact right time
sometimes compelled
by a feeling beyond themselves.
I just knew I needed to call
to pray
to make this for you
they say, but I know
it’s really you, Lord.
I may never win a debate
on an argument for the existence of God
in this world, but when you give me
glimpses
of the glory to come
I know someday
there will be no need to prove
your existence
because every knee will bow
every tongue will praise
and everyone will know
the great I AM.
