The Best Christian Books of 2020

I have read over 100 Christian books this year, and these are the best Christian books of 2020. I’ve rounded them up based on how much they impacted my thinking or strengthened my faith. Here’s my list of 12 best picks, along with my top 10 most viewed posts of the year and other recaps.

Dangerous Prayers

Dangerous Prayers

This is by far my favorite book of the year. This book is simple, powerful and profound. Craig Groeschel writes with wisdom, humor, gentleness, and honesty, sharing three basic prayers drawn straight from scripture. I love this book because it taught me to look at the scriptures in a new way and pray with more intention.

Spiritual Intelligence

Spiritual Intelligence

If you’re like me, you’ve never considered spiritual intelligence, which is what all believers have through the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet many of us have never learned how to access this power, which can transform and empower our faith. Kris Vallotton gives a smart yet accessible description of what spiritual intelligence is, and how we can use it for greater faith.

Still: 7 Ways to Find Calm in the Chaos

Still

Which of us doesn’t want more calm in their daily lives? But does that seem unattainable for you? Jenny L. Donnelly lays out a specific plan that really works. She shares her testimony in the first half of the book, telling us how her hurts and failures tempted her to think that calm wasn’t available to her. After this, she unpacks a strategy called REST for seeking stillness in the center of chaos.

Pearl in the Sand

Pearl in the Sand

I loved this sensitive, thoughtful retelling of Rahab’s story, and the romance that developed between her and Salmone after the fall of Jericho. A beautiful love story that rings true to real-life experience. God used this story to show me places where I need healing from past hurts, and gave me hope through this creative narrative. It opened my eyes to new truths in Scripture as well. A delight to read!

The Value of Wrinkles

The Value of Wrinkles

This book is a gem on a topic that isn’t often discussed. The elderly are often marginalized in our youth-obsessed society, yet Isabel Tom graciously elevates them to the place of honor they deserve. Isabel explains not only the blessings older people have to offer us, but practical ways on how to engage with them in meaningful ways.

The Fire of God's Presence

The Fire of God’s Presence

Are you a fan of A. W. Tozer’s writings? You’ll love this new compilation of his writing on seeking God’s presence for true Christian living. This magnetically drew me to deeper truths in God’s Word that transcends the division and politics in our current culture. It took me to a spiritual mountain, where the clutter was cleared away and I heard God’s voice more truly.

Reach Out Gather In

Reach Out, Gather In

This is a unique book – part devotional, part hospitality guide. I love Karen Ehman’s signature warmth and vulnerability here, which gently invites you to open your home to others in love. We tried several of her included recipes, and they were amazing! A fun read with short, engaging chapters for busy women like myself.

Half the Battle

Half the Battle

So many people have hidden hurts. They hide them deep inside because they are afraid to deal with them. Jon Chasteen helps you uncover the pain and deal with it in biblical ways. It’s a truly insightful book that is helping me work through past pain, and it can help you too. This book is so good, I recommend it highly to anyone who needs to get past old hurts.

All Shall Be Well

All Shall Be Well

This is a beautiful book with poetic prose and gorgeous imagery. It’s built around the rhythms of seasons, and gave me great hope as I read it during the quarantine. It’s a perfect reminder that God is still in control in all the rhythms of our lives, just as he has been since creation began. I enjoy escaping through lovely language that transports me to deep wells of thought, and this book is an ideal escape. It’s deep and rich, which helps me ponder wonderful truths about God. If you love poetry, nature imagery, and contemplative prose, you’ll love this book.

Becoming Sage

Becoming Sage

In my fourth decade, I’m discovering the joys and challenges of middle age. This wonderful book affirms, directs, encourages and strengthens you if you are grieving, confused, or weary in your middle years. I was originally drawn to this beautiful cover, because I love botanicals. I’m even more drawn to the inner content, which has blessed me with new motivation. It’s full of insightful research and hopeful quotes. I especially enjoyed the breakdown of spiritual stages, which helps me understand myself and others better.

I Am David

I Am David

Though I’ve studied David’s life in the Bible many times on my own, I learned much more about him in this book filled with practical lessons I can apply to my own life. I gained insight on how to fight spiritual battles, stand strong in my marriage, be intentional as a parent, and lead others with integrity.

Choose Joy

Bonus favorite: Choose Joy

Choose Joy is one of the prettiest adult coloring books I’ve encountered. My 12-year-old daughter and I are enjoying using it as part of our Art Sundays, where we set time aside to be creative. The paper weight is just right, and I appreciate the perforated pages that make the designs easy to display. We also like the variety of designs by different artists, and the blend of inspirational quotes and Scripture references. A perfect gift book for yourself or someone you love.
