A Prayer for Humility

Did you know that there are only six weeks left until the U.S. election? I know not all of my readers are located in the U.S. Yet, I want to start six weeks of prayers that are non-partisan to help you find peace throughout the next few weeks.

I’m writing the prayers based on biblical virtues, so they can apply to everyone who is reading. I’ll also include no-filter pictures of the changing leaves in my Missouri woods. May these Scripture-based prayers strengthen and encourage you.

A Prayer for Humility

A Prayer for Humility

Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Proverbs 11:12 NLT

Father in heaven, we praise you for Jesus’ beautiful example of humility.
We strive to be more like Jesus every day.
But our pride often gets in the way.
We think we know everything, when we actually know very little.
Stubbornness rears its ugly head.
We join the tide of selfishness that flows in our nation.
Forgive us, Father.
Rescue us from pride before we are disgraced.
Help us choose a path of humility instead.

Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.
Proverbs 15:33 NLT

Father, we pray that the leaders of our nation would fear you.
We pray that they would choose to follow your will instead of their own.
Make their hearts soft and teachable with the gift of humility.
Surround them with godly advisors who will share your wisdom with them.
Help our leaders see humility as an asset rather than a sign of weakness.
Give them a craving to be humble rather than proud and power-hungry.

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Colossians 3:12 NLT

Father, today we choose to put on the holy clothes you want us to wear in the coming weeks.
Mercy instead of vengeance.
Kindness instead of indifference.
Humility instead of pride.
Gentleness instead of harshness.
Patience instead of impatience.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, help us to place these virtues in our hearts, minds, attitudes, words and actions, whether demonstrated privately, online or in public.
Hold us accountable, Lord.
Make us ambassadors of humility to all around us.

They must not slander anyone and must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone.
Titus 3:2 NLT

Father, we confess that we have slandered our leaders in this contentious culture.
We have torn them down rather than building them up through prayer.
Remind us that it is our calling to submit to our leaders, because you give them authority over us.
Call us to pray for them every time we are tempted to slander, when the thoughts first enter our minds.
Help us to avoid the in-person and online quarrels that accomplish nothing fruitful.
May our words and actions demonstrate Holy Spirit-empowered gentleness and humility to everyone.

And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
1 Peter 5:5 NLT

Every morning for the next six weeks, we ask you to help us put on humility.
Help us meditate on Philippians 2, remembering that the King of Kings stooped to save us.
May we start practicing humility in our own homes first, then share it with everyone around us.
We don’t want to face opposition from you due to our prideful thoughts, words and actions.
Instead, we ask for your grace, and your Spirit-led daily reminders to dress ourselves in humility.

May our pursuit of humility in the coming weeks glorify and honor you, O Lord.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
