How to Taste and See the Lord’s Goodness

I’m writing about how to celebrate God’s goodness and enjoy closer fellowship with him today. Thanks for joining me here!

Taste and See the Lord’s Goodness

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Oh, the joys of those who trust in him!

Psalm 34:8 (NLT)

Apple season is just around the corner. Do you love the taste of fresh apples like I do?

The fresh apples of autumn appeal to our senses. Our sight is pleased by their vibrant colors. We can enjoy their sweet scent even before we taste them. We satisfy our sense of touch through their smooth skin and their crunch, and we may even like the sound of biting into a fresh apple.

God has given us many ways to enjoy apples through our senses. I love baking them into dumplings and spiced cake, and slicing them to savor with pork loin and cabbage. You can always win me over with a cold or warm cup of apple cider in my favorite month, October, which aligns with the apple harvest.

Though we can’t experience God through our five senses here on earth, he asks us to “taste and see” his goodness in this powerful verse.

But how do we do that?

I’ve learned several ways to taste and see God’s goodness, just like I can enjoy the goodness of apples in various ways. I’m sharing them with you today so you can enjoy closer fellowship with God.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “God is good, all the time.” You may have stated it on a happy day, or said it when things weren’t so good. But have you learned to celebrate God’s goodness through taste and sight?

How to Taste and See the Lord’s Goodness

Tasting Goodness

You can taste God’s goodness by praising and thanking him at every meal. Slow down and appreciate the scents and flavors of your food. Consider how God placed minerals in the earth to grow the plants or nourish the animals who became your meal. Think about the goodness God granted in germinating the seeds and sending the sun and rain to provide sustenance to you. Praise him for the variety and abundance he gives you at breakfast, lunch, supper and even snacks.

I celebrate his goodness with my morning cup of Earl Grey tea. According to the package, the tea leaves come from bergamot plants in a special region of Italy. They are packaged and distributed by a long-standing English company, then I enjoy them in my Missouri kitchen. I stir in local honey, a sweet offering from the bees in clover fields near my home. What a lovely loop of God’s goodness I enjoy in this 21st century foodie heaven!

You can taste God’s goodness every time you eat. Ponder the chain of goodness God gives you on your plate or in your cup. By praising and thanking him for these good gifts, you can enjoy closer fellowship with him.

Seeing Goodness

You can see God’s goodness in every meal, delighting in the colors and textures that you enjoy. A nourishing meal is always a cue to praise God for his goodness.

You can also look for God’s goodness in your closet. Occasionally I pray through my garment labels, asking God to bless the Christian ministries in all different parts of the world. You’ll be surprised at the many global hands God uses to show his goodness to you through clothing.

Your home is full of sights to prompt your praise of God’s goodness. Windows that give you a glimpse of his creation. Furniture to give you rest. Running water to give you life. What else do you see that shows you how good God is to you?

Look around at the technology and machinery that demonstrates God’s goodness. When you get into your vehicle, praise God for his goodness in working all the parts together to safely transport you. You can praise him for the intricate workings of your smartphone, computer and home appliances that make your life easier.

Every day, as you look around for evidence of God’s goodness and praise him for it, your relationship with him will become closer. He will give you greater peace and security as you trust him to keep providing goodness to you.

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven,

I praise you for your abundant goodness to me. Because you are good, you share your goodness with me in so many different ways. Thank you for being so good to me.

Help me slow down to notice the goodness in my life. At each meal, prompt me to praise you for the goodness of my food and drink. Every day, open my eyes to the goodness all around me in my home.

As I look for your goodness, I ask that you draw me closer in fellowship with you. I want to grow in faith, and celebrating your goodness is one way I can do that with your help.

I pray this in Jesus’ powerful name,

Amen.
