Nesting Changes Us is a prayer of transformation. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the fourth one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2022. Today’s prompt is “Nesting,” and here is my prayer/poem.
Nesting Changes Us
The little wren built her nest
in my window box of geraniums
one spring, diligent
in her daily search
for twigs, bark, moss
and discarded threads
to line a cozy hole
under the umbrella leaves.
She took flight
each time we drew too near
or pressed our noses
too close
to the window.
But her dogged determination
paid off
with one little chick
safely protected
from all predators
until it was time
to leave the nest
for the wild green woods.
I remember the instinct
of nesting
right before my three babies
came into the world:
cleaning
organizing
preparing
softening
straightening
stocking
sweeping
until all seemed right
and the babies
turned in my womb
expressing their readiness
to leave one nest
for another.
The nesting changed my focus
from self to others
from my own aches and pains
to excited anticipation
from my own agenda
to my baby’s schedule.
My arms no longer my own
but a cradle for my newborn
and my hands ready
to do all things necessary
for their arrival and care.
O Lord, I thank you
that nesting changes us
to be more like you:
the one who compares himself
to a mother hen drawing her chicks
under her wing
with soft feathers
yet wise protection.
Make me more willing
to prepare my heart and home
to receive others
and give them the softest landing place
the safest haven.
May my nesting efforts
give you greater glory.
