May 2023 Christian Book Picks

Here are my May 2023 Christian book picks for you. This is a great group of books for spiritual growth.

Secrets of Sex and Marriage

This is a fascinating read full of research-based facts from a faith-based perspective. I guarantee you will learn something new and encouraging from this book, no matter how long you have been married. It will increase understanding, empathy, and creativity for both husbands and wives. This would be an excellent book for an engaged couple going through premarital counseling. It would also make a great resource to help a husband and wife navigate talks about sex and improve their physical, emotional, and spiritual connections.

The Lord Bless You

You may not think of the Lord blessing you much, and this book will help unpack this concept for you. It’s encouraging and will help you understand how to recognize blessings you receive from God. It will also inspire you to ask for more blessings and receive them with gratitude and expectation. A powerful little book that would make a great gift due to its portable size.

My Daily Pursuit

Fans of A. W. Tozer will love this updated collection of his writings put into daily devotional forms. The devotions also include quotes from other classic Christian writers. You’ll be riveted by his no-nonsense tone and vivid word pictures that are still powerfully relevant today. A great gift for both men and women who seek deeper faith.

The Way of a Christian

Many of us are familiar with the classic story Pilgrim’s Progress, and this book repurposes it for a contemporary audience. It weaves a single truth from the book in a linear format and adds personal application for today. I appreciate the thoughtful application questions, which are good for individual study or group discussion. The layout and color scheme is pleasing to the eye as well. A good resource for a homeschool Bible study.

The Military Guide to Disarming Deception

This is a sequel to a popular book on preparing for the end times. It’s an eye-opening look at how the devil will use deceptive techniques to sway people to his side in the days leading up to Christ’s return. Each chapter has a short story from a real battlefield and draws comparisons to what’s happening in today’s headlines. The chapters end with a section on Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures for how you can fight against deception in your own mind and faith. This book would be a great read for anyone interested in end times prophecy or military books.

Hope for Ukraine

Though the news coverage of the war in Ukraine has wound down, the people of Ukraine are still suffering and in need of our prayers. This book gives us true stories of the struggles Ukrainians have faced before, during, and after February 2022 when war broke out. It will give you insight into their unique stories, inspiration for your prayers, and encouragement when you see how they are clinging to faith and hope against all odds.

Prayer Starters

What do you do when you are facing a crisis, but don’t have the words to pray? This beautifully written book by Suzanne Eller will guide you through hard times in three stages: trusting God in hard seasons, growing in hard places, and finding freedom in hard places. Suzie writes a short prayer for each day, then leaves space for you to start writing your own words back to God. She breaks in from time to time with a teaching vignette to propel you forward in your grief and healing journey. A wonderful book for someone going through a hard time.

The Clutter Fix

I need this book after 19 years of living in the same home, where clutter has been piling up for a while. It’s just the accountability partner I need to not only clean up the spaces I know that need decluttering, but the spaces I tend to ignore. I like the seasonal plans, quizzes, affirmations, and 120 things you can throw away right now. Lots of practical ideas to help you start decluttering this weekend, then keep up with your commitment for cleaner spaces from now on.

The Time-Saving Mom

I’m always looking for more tips and suggestions for managing my busy schedule. Crystal Paine is a super-busy mom who shares her system for getting so many things accomplished. I liked her 6×2 priority system, her suggestions for getting more exercise, and her crowd-sourcing in nearly every chapter from other moms who share great ideas. If you need help organizing your schedule as a mom of littles or a homeschooling mom, this is a great book for you.

The Power to Change

I enjoy books on personal growth, goal setting, and habit formation, and this book has it all, plus spiritual formation. I like Craig’s funny, self-effacing stories that show how he struggled in the past but overcame with practical steps. He lays them all out in this book, which is helping me change my mindset regarding the goals I’m setting for myself. A great book for both men and women who want to be more intentional.

You’re Going to Make It

This book is exactly what I need as I heal from past trauma. If you have worked through a good portion of your grief, and you’ve finally reached the stage where healing is possible and attainable, this is the perfect book for you. The devotions are powerful, meant to be read just one day at a time. You can’t rush through this book, and you won’t want to anyway, because the pictures are beautiful and the prayers are deep. Use this book as a companion for journaling and counseling sessions, as I’m doing, and see my favorite quote from it HERE.

Still Here and Still Struggling to Serve

Are you a woman in ministry who feels frustrated by the roadblocks to serve in the ways you are called? Gena McCown knows how you feel and writes a smart, affirming, and thought-provoking book on the unique struggles women face while serving in the church. If you know you are called to do more than what is traditionally expected of women in the church, yet you still want to follow a biblical model, this book will empower you and help you think through your next steps. An important and necessary book to facilitate much-needed changes.

Now or Never

It’s difficult to find a clean Christian romance with middle-aged love interests. This book fits the bill as a romance develops between 50-somethings who are looking for a new start. I’m loving this story in the Awestruck series, catching up with it on my Kindle every chance I get. An encouraging read that hits the right notes for the middle stages of life.
