How to Walk Forward in Faith

Are you afraid of spiritual heights? Of climbing the mountains God has set before you?

Maybe you’re not sure if God is calling you at all. Maybe you don’t know if the voices in the head belong to you, God or the enemy. Perhaps you don’t know how to move forward.

This single verse in Psalm 143 can help you. I encourage you to read the whole psalm out loud as a prayer to God. But let’s look at this one verse closely together, so we can gain firm footing as we move forward in faith.

3 Ways to Walk Forward in Faith

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.

May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.

Psalm 143:10 NLT

I’ve always been afraid of heights. As a child, I hated carnival rides. I avoided ladders, and I have still never climbed a tree. My fear of heights has both protected me and paralyzed me.

However, in the spiritual world, I’m a champion pole vaulter. God has called me to many challenges, and with each new notch upward on the trial pole, I’ve gained greater confidence.

In the spiritual places, I can now climb mountains with far less fear than in real life. God has led me along those high cliffs and is teaching me to walk even higher with his help.

This verse holds three keys to finding firm footing in our faith journeys:

  1. Seek God’s will. When we seek God’s will instead of our own, he will reward us with higher callings that require sure footing. He will reveal his will to us more and more as we draw close to him in study and prayer.
  2. Claim God as our own. Calling ourselves Christians is a privilege. We claim God’s ownership and power over us when we say, “You are my God.” We must submit to his rule over our lives to gain security in our footing.
  3. Seek the Spirit’s leading. The Holy Spirit will give us the confidence to move forward in faith, because our trust is in him rather than in ourselves. He will lead us securely along new heights and challenges in our faith.

Our faith footing can be confident when we are listening for God’s leading, submitting to his lordship, and walking in his will. Commit this verse to meditation and prayer, and experience firmer footing (whether you are afraid of heights or not).

My Life Prayer

Jesus, I praise you as my Savior and Lord.

I confess that I haven’t always trusted you to make my footing firm. When you called me to the heights, I sometimes chose the easy path instead. I have climbed without trusting you, then slipped and fell. Today I renew my commitment to trust you with my whole heart.

Teach me how to carry out your will in my current situation. I ask your Holy Spirit to lead me forward, assuring me of firm footing in faith. Help me to find confidence in you alone.

I pray this in Your powerful name,

Amen.
