A New Focus for a New Year

Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105 (NLT)

Two years ago I began asking God to help me choose a verse for me to focus upon for an entire year. I chose Isaiah 26:3 as my verse in 2017, and I used it to focus on God’s perfect peace for 365 days. In 2018 God led me to choose Mark 9:23 as my verse, and I focused on believing nothing is impossible with God.

These verses formed the framework for my thoughts all year. When I felt stressed, confused or conflicted, these verses brought me God’s peace. God’s Word helped me feel centered and more purposeful. A single word of scripture or a singular verse can bring you peace in the new year as well.

My Life Lesson

God’s Word has the power to guide us and light up the path ahead in our faith journeys. When we use a verse or word of scripture to continually guide us for 12 months, God will help us grow in that particular area of belief.

How do you choose a focus word or verse? First, ask God to show you. He will bring the same verse or word to your attention in songs, sermons, social media posts and of course, Bible readings. The best way to determine your focus is through prayer. God will reveal your area of focus as you keep asking, seeking and knocking.

When you have your focus word or verse, place it where you will see it several times per day. I made my focus verse into my desktop screensaver. You can also write it on a sticky note and place it on your bathroom mirror, inside your planner, or on your desk. Look online for an inspirational graphic that contains your verse or word and make it your phone lock screen (with permission) or create your own.

Every time you see this verse, meditate on it. Ask God how he wants you to apply it that hour, day, week and month. He will show you new and different ways where this verse or word fits into your life, and he may surprise you with applications you never considered before.

By this time next year, you will be amazed at how much God has grown your faith with a single scripture or word! You’ll likely also have memorized a new verse that will forever stay in your heart.

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven,

Thank you for the power of your Word. I am so grateful for the guidance it contains.

Please help me choose a word from Scripture or a single verse that will shape my new year. I trust that you will reveal it to me multiple times so I know that it should be my area of focus. I’m excited to see what you will reveal.

Use your word to help me grow in a specific area of faith this year, Lord. I want to grow to greater Christlikeness in the new year, and I pray that this verse or word will help me do that.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
