When Addiction Afflicts Your Family

Are you a member of a family afflicted by addiction? For my entire life, that’s been my story. I’ve never been addicted myself, but my loved ones’ addictions have had a traumatic, lasting impact on my life.

This summer, I began studying about alcoholism and its effects on family members. The sad news is that even if you never drink a drop of alcohol, your loved one’s drinking problem can afflict almost every area of your life. Its effects won’t go away unless you receive professional help.

The good news is that if addiction afflicts your family, you can find hope and healing in God’s Word. I’m on a journey of recovery now. By meditating on a specific Bible passage, I’ve gained the courage to seek healing and reach for hope, and I’ve found a new kind of peace. I want to share what I’ve learned with you today.

I’m writing about how we can get well as family members of addicted loved ones at Devotable today. Here’s a peek at my post, and I hope you’ll head over to read the rest.

When Your Sense of Worth is Tied to Production

Are you a high achiever who secretly ties her sense of worth to production? I am. I know many of my readers struggle with feeling like they have to perform to earn love. That’s been my story for most of my life.

This constant performance is exhausting. No matter how hard I try (and boy, do I try hard!), I always feel a little empty inside. I think, “If I could just produce that one other thing, I will feel good about myself.” When that goal is accomplished, I immediately pursue another goal, since the emptiness remains.

If you relate to this inner struggle, I understand you, friend. The good news is that God can set us free from that struggle. I’m a recovering perfectionist. I’ll always be tempted to think my worth is tied to production. Yet God has shown me that my worth lies in him, not in how much I produce. I’d love to help you learn that lesson.

How to Start Planning for Christmas Peace

How are you planning for Christmas peace this year? It’s not too early to think about it, because the holiday season brings loads of stress (especially for busy moms).

It’s October as I write this post. I love enjoying the fall leaves, sweater weather, and pumpkin spice now. Yet I’ve learned that a little planning for Christmas now goes a long way toward a more peaceful December.

In 2016, I self-published my first book, Christmas Peace for Busy Moms. My friend Meghan hosted me in October 2018 on her blog for an interview, and she did a great job! Since she revamped her blog, I needed to repost it here in its entirety. Enjoy!

How is the Holy Spirit Working in Your Life

How is the Holy Spirit working in your life? Every day, I’m eager to watch how he will weave details together to show me his will.

Watching the Holy Spirit work is exciting. He uses Bible readings, conversations with Christian friends, songs, sermons and Christian books to shape my spiritual journey. I am always finding new surprises in my faith based on how the Holy Spirit is working.
