What a Broken Heart Feels Like

What a Broken Heart Feels Like is a poem I wrote in 10 minutes this Sunday morning. I hope it affirms your hurt and encourages you if you have a broken heart.

What a Broken Heart Feels Like

I look for the pen

to heal me again

since pouring out words

and pictures

seems to help.

In the book I open

the joy expert asks:

“What does your heart

look like now?”

A waterfall bursts inside

and finds its exit

in rivulets down my face

as I picture the seat of my emotions

desires

and longings:

battered

bruised

broken

purple, blue, and black

delicately strewn with orchid petals

and held in hands

I don’t trust.

It’s not even beating.

How can it possibly hope,

much less seek joy?

No wonder

after a lifetime of suffering

then three long years

of daily torture.

Yet it is held

by the only one

with the breath

of life

the only one

who can breathe life

back into it.

So my tears

form a little ocean

around the heart

cocooning it

in intensive care

as I wait for the healer

to make it whole again.
