Sunday Praise – Breakthrough is a poem I wrote in five unedited minutes based on a photo I took this week.

Sunday Praise – Breakthrough

I see you, sun
blazing just behind
grey storm clouds
pressing heavy with humidity
this summer afternoon.
I remember your power
closed in by a perfect circle
for four short minutes
last year, when day became dusk
and all creation paused in wonder
at the Maker’s handiwork
including me.
I see you, Son of Man
tracing your finger
along the scorched
edges of my suffering
and I feel your breath in my ear
as you say, “I have not forgotten.
I will not forget
my promises to you.”
I remember my fists
balled and beating
against your chest
as darkness enveloped
all the light only you could see.
I see you, Son of God,
reigning
over this liminal space
where the blazing light
is almost
almost
breaking through.
Will the clouds spill out
sudden patters of warm rain
dampening the ground
yet again
or will the sun burst forth
and turn the heads
of all the sunflowers
in my field?
Surprise me.
