When you feel disillusioned by fellow Christians, what do you do? Here’s my testimony of how I’m handling disillusionment.
When You Feel Disillusioned by Fellow Christians
In the past few months, I’ve felt disillusioned and disappointed by a
lack of integrity in several people in my professional and personal life.
Some of these are people in ministry who are clearly hypocritical behind the scenes and don’t have a shepherd’s heart or humility – essential traits in a true servant of God.
Some lie about their appearances, marital status, etc., to appear more attractive.
All of these people self-identify as Christians.
Emotional Immaturity and Disillusionment
I know they lack emotional maturity, which directly impacts their spiritual maturity, and that’s not my problem. But it does impact me in a negative way.
Here’s a highly recommended book on this subject – all Christians should read it. It’s part of the spiritual formation track at my church.

Fighting Disillusionment
This morning, I saw a video clip that spoke right to me and countered my disillusionment.
It reminded me to not give up, trust that God has a plan, and there are good, godly people out there who are worth my time, energy, and professional partnerships.
The video creator said that a good attitude makes all the difference and will stand out.
That’s what I’m trying to cultivate.
It’s not easy because I’m naturally a glass-half-empty person.
A Lesson on Disillusionment
I’m reflecting on this truth that
Nick Saban shared in last week’s GLS summit.
He said early in his career, a priest gave him a book for spiritual growth, and the first sentence said, “Life is difficult.”
Nick was confused because he thought the priest was going to offer encouragement, like a coach’s pep talk.
It took him a while to realize it, but then he got the point.
He said it’s easier to have a positive attitude when you accept that life is difficult and don’t hold a false, overly positive view of it.
This concept fueled his outstanding career and allowed him to mentor champions with a positive mindset despite the real challenges they faced.
Choosing a Better Attitude
I’m working on this.
Some days are better than others.
What’s helping most is naming my emotions – all of them.
After naming them, I give them over to God.
I’m also taking one day at a time.
I’m being 100 percent honest with myself and God, and I know I’ll never regret that.
If you are also struggling to believe that there are good people out there because you’ve been burned by the dishonest, emotionally immature ones, please know you’re not alone. I’m linking arms with you as we choose a different attitude.
Here are a couple of encouraging slides from
John Maxwell‘s excellent talk at GLS.
