Practical Advent is a daily blog series I’m doing throughout Advent this year. Join me on my blog each day for practical faith tips.
Practical Advent, Day 9
Since childhood, I’ve observed Advent each year. It’s been a wonderful way to build my faith and increase my anticipation of Christmas for all the right reasons. I highly encourage you to observe Advent as well, because it can help you be more intentional in this busy season.
In this Practical Advent blog series, I’ll have the same post format to give you about 10-15 minutes of practical tips for loving God, loving others, and loving yourself during the Advent season.
Praise
Each day of Practical Advent, I’ll share one of my favorite songs to listen to during Advent. Take a moment to praise God while you listen.
Here’s one I love listening to on repeat – When Hope Came Down by Kari Jobe.
Ponder
Every day of Practical Advent, I’ll share a quote or idea from an Advent book in my collection for you to ponder, along with my thoughts and a few reflection questions.
Today’s quote is from one of my favorite new Advent books published this year – The Spirit of Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti.
Here’s my Goodreads review of this excellent book:
I enjoy Advent devotionals, and this one is a new, treasured gem.
I liked the insightful facts about familiar scriptures that gave them new meaning.
Also, I enjoyed the writer’s wry humor and creative imagining of what the people in the story might have felt. It’s worth a reread each year, and I’m grateful I found it.
Here’s the quote I’ve chosen to share today:
“But so much is birthed in us and so many possibilities become embryos of hope that grow to maturity when we allow the Holy Spirit to overwhelm us with the glory of God.“
Reflection questions:
- When has God birthed something in you in the past?
- What do you think God wants to birth in you this Advent?
Pray
On each post during Practical Advent, I’ll write an original prayer or share one I’ve written in seasons past.
Here’s a prayer I wrote a few years ago – A Prayer for Peaceful Expectations.
Pour In

A simmer pot is a great way to humidify the dry air in your home and add natural scents with no chemicals. For many years, I’ve filled a pot with water and simmered orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Sometimes I add rosemary or cranberries. This makes my home smell wonderful and lifts my spirits too. It costs very little yet makes a big difference.
Pour Out
Do you know what EVERYONE wants for Christmas that doesn’t cost a cent? I wrote about this a few years ago, and I encourage you to read it HERE.
Just for Fun
This is a funny remake with cute puppets that I hope makes you smile. It recalls my teen years when Wayne and Garth jammed out to Bohemian Rhapsody in the movie Wayne’s World. It’s a clean, fun remake with the Christmas story retold in a creative way.
