Practical Advent is a daily blog series I’m doing throughout Advent this year. Join me on my blog each day for practical faith tips.
Practical Advent, Day 15
Since childhood, I’ve observed Advent each year. It’s been a wonderful way to build my faith and increase my anticipation of Christmas for all the right reasons. I highly encourage you to observe Advent as well, because it can help you be more intentional in this busy season.
In this Practical Advent blog series, I’ll have the same post format to give you about 10-15 minutes of practical tips for loving God, loving others, and loving yourself during the Advent season.
Praise
Each day of Practical Advent, I’ll share one of my favorite songs to listen to during Advent. Take a moment to praise God while you listen.
Here’s another good one from Phil Wickham – Face of God.
Ponder
Every day of Practical Advent, I’ll share a quote or idea from an Advent book in my collection for you to ponder, along with my thoughts and a few reflection questions.
Today’s quote is from Embracing Emmanuel by Jen Soehnlin.
This is a tender, thoughtful Advent devotional I highly recommend. It is affirming and comforting, and I enjoyed every minute of reading it.
Here’s the quote I’ve chosen to share today:
“Every twinkle of Christmas lights, every flickering Advent candle, and every star shining in the night sky points us to the One who created them all.”
Reflection questions:
- Which Christmas light display was your favorite one in childhood?
- Which light display can bring you joy and wonder this Advent season?
Pray
On each post during Practical Advent, I’ll write an original prayer or share one I’ve written in seasons past.
Here’s a prayer I wrote a few years ago – A Prayer for Christmas Celebration.
Pour In
Drive around and look at Christmas lights this week. Here in the Midwest, it will be too cold to do much of anything, but this activity can help us burn off some cabin fever. Our local parks have light displays, and our local newspaper collects a list of great home displays too. Doing this brings out the kid in me and lifts my spirits every year. I hope it does the same for you.
Pour Out
Every Christmas, I run into at least one Scrooge or Grinch. Years ago, I wrote a post about how to handle people like this with grace. I hope it helps you – read it HERE.
Just for Fun
Here’s a video clip from a song my kids loved to sing to me when they were young – and it’s a good reminder for us adults at Christmastime too.
