Watering My Heart’s Garden

Nothing waters my garden better than a slow, steady rain. The whole garden benefits from being watered all around. I can’t replicate those results with fancy sprinklers and drip hoses. Only God waters my garden best.

In the same way, time with him gives me life like no other experience, even in comparison to time with my loved ones. Jesus was right when he said he offers living water. Time every morning with God in prayer and Bible study has revolutionized my heart, mind, and soul. Each week, month, and year that passes, I can see God’s Word moving in my life and shaping me to be more like Jesus. The living water of God’s Word nourishes and nurtures my heart’s garden.

I enjoy container gardening, which requires extra watering. I check my container plants daily. They need water at least every other day, sometimes twice per day in the heat of summer. They wilt and fade very quickly without water. Since the container plants dry out faster than if they were in the ground, my scheduled watering is essential. They thrive best if I water in the morning so they are sustained throughout the long, hot afternoon.

Watering from God’s Word and God’s People

In the church, I feel more like a garden plant, surrounded by a comfortable group of similar species. We share the nutrients and moisture, and we thrive in group plantings. I am particularly fruitful as a garden plant. The large garden is my favorite place to grow.

Out in the world, I feel more like a container plant. I need more sustenance away from the larger garden. More watering from God’s Word, especially in the morning, to sustain me through long, hot trials.  I will dry out quickly if I don’t receive daily watering, because I don’t have the shared benefits of being in the church among like-minded people. Staying watered out in the world is vital to my health and well-being…as well as maintaining my “attractiveness” for those watching me.

Here in my temperate climate, almost none of my plants thrive without frequent watering. I don’t raise desert plants here. My container plants and garden plants are dependent on regular waterings. My heart’s garden is the same. I grow best with frequent watering from God’s Word and God’s people.

Questions for reflection:

How does time with God’s Word in the morning water your heart?

How do you feel refreshed after time with God’s people in the church?
