The Power of Praying Big

I’m happy to introduce TWO new items for you today! First, The Power of Prayer series begins today, and continues every Wednesday in August. Second, read on for my brand-new video series, Finding Peace in the Busy Back-To-School Season!

I’ve been praying for BIG things this year, and God has granted some BIG answers.

This spring, I worried about our tax bill. I thought it would equal many thousands of dollars. I prayed fervently for provision. In April we got the amazing answer that we’d owe only $108.00 in BOTH state and federal taxes. I paid more in taxes the first year I worked as a teenager! God answered those prayers in a BIG way.

I also felt called to leave my secretarial job and pursue the freelance life this May. I prayed that God would provide enough freelance work for me to equal my secretarial pay, so we can afford to keep all three of our children in private Christian school for one more year (our oldest will attend public high school next year).

It’s now almost three months since I began full-time freelance work. God has provided four regular jobs for me, and three of them are writing and editing Christian material. Also, I received notice from our wonderful church that they are offsetting our tuition costs even more this year, so our tuition payments equal only 15% of what I anticipated having to pay. Talk about BIG answers to prayer!

I’ve prayed for decades that God would bring my dreams of writing to life. My prayers are being answered in BIG ways right now, because God has BIG plans for me.

He’s finally convinced me that my prayers are powerful, even when I feel anxious, scared, frustrated, or small when I utter them. Especially with this next example.

When I was at She Speaks 2017, we endured a widespread power outage on Friday night. I woke up around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and realized the power was still off. I began praying in a rather bossy way:

God, you are bigger than this power grid. We need you, Father! Think of all the ministries that are at stake here–all the publisher meetings, networking opportunities, and ways that your Gospel can spread further through the hundreds of women at this conference. We simply can’t do this with the power off, God. We need elevators to work, breakfast to be prepared, showers to be warm and hair dryers in full operation. We need lighting and sound in every single room–especially for group worship, Lord! You have to do something, God, and you have to do it now!

At 4:41 a.m., the power was restored, right when I was praying. Of course, God could turn the power back on whenever He deemed. But part of me wonders…was He waiting to hear my prayer first?

Friend, what prayer is God waiting on you to utter?

Jesus spoke this beautiful truth in Matthew 17:20 NIV:

“Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

After this year, I’m no longer doubting that I can move mountains through prayer. Have you experienced this freedom and power, available to you through the Holy Spirit?

What mountains need moving in your life?

Finances? Job situation? Health? Relationships?

Lift your prayer up today. Trust that He hears you and will work in BIG ways on your behalf.

Then give Him all the glory for the BIG answers you receive!

In the comments, please share what BIG answers God has given you this year, so we can praise Him together!

  1. How great is our God and for all His answers to your prayers this very big year! (i must have slept through the power outage) – God’s power is prevalent – I pray for eyes to see it and a voice to ask for it and a heart to rely on it! I’ll post your busy series on our Moms of Grace (church) fb page. Super job, Sarah.

    1. Wow, thank you so much, Sue! I appreciate you sharing this post with your group. Blessings to you, friend!

  2. Great encouragement here, Sarah. I’m one to pray to God, but do so with little expectancy that He’ll answer. Sometimes it’s because I want His will, other times it’s just because I wonder if my prayers are too big. But I’ve also been growing more confident in prayer and telling God that I believe in His power and might to answer in exceedingly abundant ways. Happy to pin this post today!

    1. Thanks for the pin, Tiffany. I pray you will keep growing in prayer confidence, friend!

  3. Hi Sarah,
I love to hear stories about big prayer asks and God answering in ways that are so personal to us! Your situation and needs are never out of God’s view but something powerful happens when we pray, doesn’t it? Loved reading this today!

    1. Thanks Valerie! I don’t always get big answers like these, but they certainly keep me pushing forward in my “smaller” prayers too. Blessings to you!

  4. What an amazing post about how God has answered your prayers, Sarah! I love this and had no idea you prayed that prayer as we lay in the dark that weird night in Concord! ha! Thanks for doing that b/c you know how worried I was about getting a warm shower and blow drying my hair! Lol! But all kidding aside, it’s great to hear these stories of God’s goodness when we pray. You leave us encouraged to pray, pray, and pray some more!

    1. Ha ha, I didn’t know if I told you that! 🙂 Maybe it’s because I was trying to keep it quiet while you slept! Yes indeed, our late night conversations inspired me to pray bigger about lots of other things too, friend! Looking forward to seeing you and Amy at the Blue Owl!

  5. I think your encouragement to pray big is right on. At the same time, I think we also need to learn to just be with God without asking for anything. When we only ask for what we want, then we miss the biggest privilege of prayer… which is just knowing the Creator of the Universe!

    1. Hi Karen, thanks for your visit! I totally agree with you. I love just being in God’s presence, praising him and adoring him 100% sometimes, then praying in other times. That’s a very insightful comment, and I’m glad you shared it.

  6. I have long believed that God wants to answer prayer but we need to pray them first!!! God does not intrude on us, but rather, He waits for us to pray, then He moves (sometimes He moves before we pray bu that’s another discussion.) And when He puts desires in our hearts to pray, He is ready to act on them. So, yes, we need to pray big for nothing is impossible for our God! Enjoyed reading your post as you remind us to pray big.
Visiting from Seeking God with Jaime Wiebel.

    1. Thanks Cindy! It’s mysterious to consider how God may wait on us to ask first before he answers. Glad you stopped by!

  7. Thank you for sharing this! You remind me of one of my favorite books Live a Praying Life by Jennifer Kennedy Dean. She speaks of how because God is sovereign of course he can do anything, but, he wants to hear it from us. He lays things on our heart because he wants us to pray. I love that…he wants to hear from ME! And YOU! Isn’t that amazing?! And I do agree if we pray big and believe he will answer big.

    1. Hi Amanda! I’ve never heard of that book, and I’m going to check it out now. Thanks for sharing here.

    1. Lynn, thanks for your comment! I’m hoping my posts encourage others and move them to praise God too.

  8. John Newton wrote:
You are coming to a King.
    Large petitions with thee bring,
For His grace and power are such
None could ever ask too much.

I’m so guilty of praying small and safe. Thanks for sharing the ways in which God is leading and teaching you.

    1. LOVE that you shared this brief poem! I am praying for both big and small things, and seeing amazing results. Blessings to you!

  9. Sarah, this is such a great post! I’m a huge fan of the power of prayer. God is sovereign and He gave us Holy Spirit to speak and believe things to happen. Thanks for sharing this 🙂

  10. This is so good, Sarah! Sometimes we need reminding just how big our God is… I need more boldness in my prayer life, for sure! Thanks for your encouragement 🙂 Stopping by from ##TellHisStory
