Nevers, September 2000

2000 september0001

I never thought

I’d ride in the middle

of a pickup truck, but

I can’t stop touching him.

I never imagined

I’d be the only girl

in a house with three guys.

I never dreamed

I’d plan a wedding

for the same year I met

my first boyfriend in five years.

I never pictured myself

with someone uninterested in books

with someone casual about faith

with someone who drinks every day, but

I can’t breathe

in a world without him now.

I never thought Dad would remarry again

before my first wedding.

I could have never predicted

this aching distance between me and Mom

but if  I must abandon my freedom

to close the gap, I’m never

turning back.
