How to Worship God through a Garden’s Beauty

How to Worship God Through a Garden's Beauty

Listen to this as a podcast episode HERE.

Is any place more beautiful than a well-tended garden?

God planted a love of beauty in our hearts, back in the garden of Eden, intended to help us worship him. Eve first opened her eyes in the most beautiful garden that has ever existed. Can you imagine her delight and pleasure in those first moments, when her gaze first took in God’s glorious creation?

Even after sin entered the world and tainted every living thing, God showered beauty on us in his lavish grace. He uses beauty to draw us to him in wonder and amazement. This passage has always given me pause:

See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  Matthew 6:28-29 NIV

While telling this story, I imagine Jesus waving his hands toward the fields, where the wild lilies were opening their faces to the sun. I imagine like many flowers, their blooms lasted only one day and then their beauty faded. Jesus made a comparison between those tiny flowers and Solomon’s majestic robes, saying the flowers were superior to the richest king’s most glorious covering.

Think about the gorgeous, sequin-covered gowns we see on the Academy Awards. Can you imagine a common wildflower being more beautiful than gowns that cost many thousands of dollars?

The more I study my garden, the more I find Jesus’ observation about lilies to be true.

Take the example of begonias.

Upon close inspection, both their leaves and flowers sparkle with many natural pinpoints of reflection.  No one labors to sew on their sequins. Also, no one spins their gossamer threads together.

No one can possibly create something as beautiful as a flower from only dust and water, other than God Himself.

God draws me to worship him through the beauty of nature. This week in spring’s height, he asks me to study his perfectly crafted columbine flowers and take wonder in their shapes.

He brings me joy with the rainbow colors and unique fragrance of my irises.

He pleases me with the bright lavender-pink of my azalea bush and the cheery yellow of my golden Alexanders.

I take delight in the shy lily-of-the-valley, hiding under shaded leaves. Every spring I pick a small bouquet and set it by my bedside, basking in the lovely scent.

Take time this week to enter a garden and praise God for his glorious handiwork. Pause to remember only God can create something so beautiful from nothing. Thank him for surrounding you with beauty as a means to draw you to himself. Let a moment in a garden refresh you with rest, peace, and a greater sense of God’s love for you, his masterpiece of creation, far more beautiful than any flower!
