Cheers to the Diaper Years: A book review

Cheers to the Diaper Years

I met the author of this delightful book at She Speaks 2018. We were both pitching our next book ideas, and we instantly connected like old friends. Erin Brown Hollis is a legit Southern belle, and her sparkling, smart, honest sense of humor shines through her first book.

Even though it’s been almost a decade since I was in the diaper years with my children, I have been entertained and convicted by Erin’s book. Her tone is so true, you will literally feel like your best girlfriend is sitting by you (in her pajamas at a grown-up sleepover party) while you’re reading. I found myself smiling and laughing out loud in the first few pages, and it continued onward into the next chapters.

Erin admits that the diaper years are HARD. All of us who have been there can say, “Amen!” to that statement. But they are also precious in a unique way. How I miss the sweet kisses and innocent wonder of my children’s baby years. They are still precious to me in their teen/tween stages now, but there is something uniquely poignant about those exhausting, beautiful diaper years. Yet it’s harder to see that truth when you are in those years, and Erin beautifully and hilariously describes them.

She helps moms get through those crumb-covered, stained years with authenticity and faith. If you know a young mom feeling totally overwhelmed to the point of tears, you need to buy this book for her. Then babysit her kids for a few hours while she sinks into the tub and cries and laughs through this charming read. She’ll thank you forever for this gift!

Favorite quotes from Cheers to the Diaper Years:

  • Forget about having a pristine entryway and the most scrumptious treats. I want people to remember me for being gentle, joyful and kind.
  • The fear that you are not up to the constant challenges of parenting, causing you to feel like checking yourself into a recurring therapy session (or twelve), will creep in–often more than once throughout the day. You are not alone.
  • God already has an agenda laid out for the day…He already knows the noodles will boil and the babies will scream. If we just ask Him for guidance, He will get us through all of it.

I’m giving a copy of Cheers to the Diaper Years away to one blessed reader. Keep reading to learn how you can enter the giveaway!

Fully Alive: Learning to Flourish in Mind, Body and Spirit

Fully Alive

I was blessed to attend one of Susie Larson‘s sessions at She Speaks 2017, and I still remember the wisdom she shared. I enjoyed her book In Over Your Head so much that I jumped at the chance to serve on the launch team for Fully Alive.

The best word I can use to describe this book is “amazing.” If you want to find lasting healing for your mind, body and spirit, this book has it all. Each chapter has an engaging narrative filled with Susie’s life stories and spiritual insights. Then she provides action items for reflection on an area of struggle, such as fear or guilt. Next, you’ll find probing questions and space to consider your own journey. Finally, Susie leads you through a praise exercise and offers more help for fighting your spiritual battles.

Fully Alive helps you deal with your problems on a deep, personal level. It is already challenging me to think in new ways about my hangups, though I have gone through years of Bible study and therapy.

Many of us moms are dealing with deep struggles and don’t know how to tackle them. Susie’s book offers practical help that you can engage with at your own pace.

Favorite quotes from Fully Alive:

  • A distressed soul creates a distressed body. Where our thoughts most often go, our lives follow. And the hurts and heartbreaks that we endure? They too will settle into our souls and into our cells unless we learn to metabolize them with God’s help and loving perspective.
  • I’m convinced–like never before–that God intends to do miracles in our day. I believe–with all my heart–that we’d see far more miracles on the earth today if there were more faith in our hearts.
  • He intends to deliver you from your troubles, from your painful memories, and even from the unreasonable fears that occasionally surface.
  • The sooner we start measuring ourselves by God’s grace rather than by our past experiences or man’s esteem, the sooner we will be comfortable in our own skin and begin to love our story.

I love reading books in which women who are further along than me share their wisdom and biblical insights. You will benefit from this book which is both deeply spiritual and imminently practical. Susie also offers free printouts of beautiful affirmations from Fully Alive on her website. You’ll get a lot of value for your money by purchasing Fully Alive.

Bethany House generously granted me a preview copy of this book.

First Breath of Morning: A 90-Day Devotional

First Breath of Morning

Kathy Cheek and I got to know each other through blog linkups, and I’m so glad she reached out to me with a review request for her devotional. It is beautifully written and perfect for Christian moms of all stages, because the devotions are quite brief yet packed with truth.

The book is divided into six chapters with short readings in each one. Kathy’s writing voice is poetic and contemplative, inviting you into deeper relationship with your Creator. You can spend five minutes with this book every morning for 90 days and draw closer to God, no matter how busy you are as a mom.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from First Breath of Morning:

  • As we choose to place our first thoughts upon him each morning, we begin the day with the joy that can only come from walking in close relationship to the Lord.
  • Sometimes I forget how carefully I must guard what is so precious to me—taking time to steal away quietly and deeply focus, putting away thoughts of everything else and drawing near to the Lord.
  • In every frustration, he comes to us with peace. He loves us and doesn’t want us to stay in an agitated and bothered state. When we place the frustration in his hands, our thirst is quenched with calmness and peace.

This new devotional will breathe God’s peace into your busy days. The brief readings are practical and inspiring for Christian moms.

The author kindly shared a preview copy of this book with me.
